The new hangar of low cost carrier Wizz Air at Budapest Airport will open on 1 September 2015

Budapest, Hungary, 2015-6-30 — /Travel PR News/ — The new line maintenance hangar of leading Central and Eastern European low cost carrier Wizz Air is taking shape quickly at the heart of the aircraft maintenance (MRO) area at Budapest Airport. The new hangar will be handed over to Wizz Air on 1 September 2015, and will serve the daily maintenance needs of the carrier’s dynamically growing fleet of Airbus A320s.

Robust steel structures have appeared in recent days at Budapest Airport’s aircraft maintenance (MRO) area, between the existing Lufthansa Technik and Aeroplex of Central Europe hangars. In addition to 2000 square meters of hangar space, the new Wizz Air facility will have an additional 170 square meters for spare parts storage, offices and social rooms. The hangar investment of approximately 3 million euros (1 billion HUF) is financed by Budapest Airport, and is being built by Hungarian construction company Market Építő Zrt. Budapest Airport and Wizz Air, the leading low cost carrier in the CEE region, signed a 15-year lease agreement for the newly built line maintenance hangar.

Wizz Air is currently stationing 9 Airbus A320 type aircraft in Budapest; however, its current Airbus fleet is 61 aircraft strong. Wizz Air carries more than 16.5 million passengers annually with this fleet on 380 routes to 112 destinations in 38 countries. Wizz Air recently announced the purchase of 110 new Airbus A321neo type aircraft from year 2019 onwards, to meet the growing needs of low cost travel in Europe and beyond. Budapest Airport has designed and is currently constructing a line maintenance hangar to accommodate the larger Airbus A321neo type aircraft, equipped with winglets.

“We are pleased to see the rapid progress in the construction of the new Wizz Air hangar; every day brings us closer to the successful completion of this important development project,” commented René Droese, property director for Budapest Airport, in charge of the hangar investment project. He added: “The new hangar will help our partner, Wizz Air to make its operation even smoother, and to increase aircraft availability not only in Hungary, but in the entire region. The new Wizz Air hangar will also create valuable, highly skilled jobs in the Hungarian aviation industry.”
