(NEWS) MAUI, Hawaii, 2026-May-4 — /Travel PR News/ — Luxury resorts are increasingly positioning themselves as cultural platforms, and in Maui, one long-running initiative is continuing to blur the line between hospitality and community engagement.
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea has opened applications for the 2026 edition of its START: A Student Artist Immersion program, a mentorship initiative designed to support emerging local artists at a formative stage in their development. According to a press release published by Four Seasons, the program is now in its fifth year and continues to focus on connecting Maui-based high school students with established professionals in the arts.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with art consultant Rosina Potter, is aimed at high school juniors and seniors across Maui, with applications open through May 31, 2026. Each year, two students are selected to take part in a structured, multi-week mentorship experience that combines practical exposure with professional guidance.
Participants will present their work through a dedicated Artists Showcase hosted at the resort, where they will exhibit alongside some of the island’s established artists. The showcase is scheduled to run across three weeks during the summer, offering students direct interaction with visitors, collectors, and members of the local arts community.
A central component of the program is the one-on-one mentorship pairing, with each student matched to a professional artist whose style or medium aligns with their own work. The mentorship includes personalized guidance, as well as informal engagement opportunities such as a studio visit or a hosted lunch at Ferraro’s, one of the resort’s dining venues.
Additional support is provided through a dedicated session with Potter, alongside a USD 3,000 scholarship intended to support further education in the arts. The structure reflects a broader focus on building practical pathways for students considering creative careers, particularly in a location where access to industry networks can be limited.
Beyond the individual experience, the program also serves as part of a wider effort to sustain Maui’s local arts ecosystem. By integrating student work into a high-visibility hospitality setting, the initiative creates a platform that connects emerging talent with an international audience, while reinforcing the role of cultural programming within the resort environment.
Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of five completed works, along with short written statements and an essay outlining their interest in pursuing the arts after high school. Availability for summer showcase participation is also part of the selection criteria. The selected students for the 2026 program are expected to be announced on June 10.
Programs such as START highlight a growing trend across the hospitality sector, where luxury properties are expanding their role beyond accommodation to include cultural curation and community engagement. In destinations like Maui, this approach allows resorts to contribute to local creative industries while offering guests a more locally grounded experience.
