Stagecoach South introduces new fleet of environmentally-friendly buses in Basingstoke

Basingstoke welcomes environmentally-friendly bus fleet

Perth, Scotland, 2019-Dec-04 — /Travel PR News/ — Stagecoach South has unveiled a new fleet of environmentally-friendly buses to the Basingstoke community.

A £5.3 million investment by Stagecoach has enabled the rollout of 32 new Euro 6 low emission buses celebrated at a launch ceremony in Basingstoke on Monday 2nd December, as the company looks towards a greener transport future across the South of England. This new fleet will run 70 per cent of the Basingstoke bus network, operating across six of the key services around the town.

Introduction of the new fleet reflects Stagecoach South’s wider campaign to encourage the public to use buses – rather than cars – in order to reduce the UK’s collective carbon footprint.  Each Euro 6 bus emits fewer emissions overall than the average diesel car, despite having 15 to 20 times the capacity, providing a significant CO2 saving for passengers. Moving forward, Stagecoach South will only purchase Euro 6 or alternative fuel buses into its fleet.

The new fleet will operate an improved timetable, with more frequent buses that run later into the evening, all of which will feature USB charging points and Wi-Fi. On all main routes, these additional evening journeys will run to midnight in a bid to help local passengers get home safely and easily following a night in town on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And Stagecoach South’s Nightrider multi journey ticket offers unlimited ‘hop on/hop off’ travel after 7pm for just £2.50.

Edward Hodgson, Managing Director of Stagecoach South, said: “Basingstoke has long been one of our busiest hubs, which makes it the perfect location for such an environmentally friendly fleet.

“We have combined greener vehicles with additional features that provide the latest in passenger comfort, and improved services to run more frequently and later into the evening – on all main routes we are running services until midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday!”

“Not only are we fully committed to reducing our collective carbon footprint across the South of England, but we want to show how buses can actually help us move towards a low carbon Britain. By taking the bus more often, the people of Basingstoke can significantly reduce their carbon emissions”

Councillor Simon Bound, Deputy Leader of Basingstoke & Deane Council, said: “In Basingstoke and Deane we have been bold and set ourselves the ambitious target of achieving a carbon neutral borough by 2030 and this only be achieved with the support of everyone working together to  reduce our impact on the environment. This new fleet of Stagecoach vehicles is a really positive step in the right direction and one that we can all build on to encourage greater use of public transport and the development of more sustainable methods of travel.”
