Sheremetyevo International Airport gears up for the 2018 FIFA World Cup

MOSCOW, Russia,, 2018-Jun-05 — /Travel PR News/ — Sheremetyevo International Airport is the largest Russian airport in terms of passenger and freight throughput, takeoff and landing operations, the size of passenger and cargo facilities. In 2017, Sheremetyevo served 40 million 93 thousand people what is 17.8% more than in 2016.

Sheremetyevo is among the leaders of international ratings in Europe by the terms of passenger services quality, throughput growth and punctuality of flights.

Sheremetyevo is implementing a large-scale long-term development program (DP) up to 2026. The JSC “SIA” investment volume in infrastructure for this period will reach $ 2.556 billion. The most important stage of the program is the preparation of the airport for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Within the preparation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the following objects in Sheremetyevo were commissioned: new Terminal B with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year, underground interterminal passage with passenger and luggage tunnels and two stations, a modern automated cargo terminal with the annual capacity of 380,000 tonnes of cargo. The construction of a third fuel tank with a capacity of up to 1.2 million aviation fuel annually is at the final stage.

At present, the first stage of new Terminal C covering 116,000 m2 with a capacity of 20 million passengers per year is under construction. The construction is undergoing within the development plan of the Northern Terminal Complex (NTC) that will be completed in 2019.

Total investment volume of JSC “SIA” in development projects reached $722 million.

1. Terminal B with multi-level parking for 2500 cars (investments — $ 327 million: $ 275 million — Terminal B, $ 52 million — parking)

Terminal B is part of the NTC. The capacity is 20 million passengers per year (4,110 pax / hour). The total area is 110,500 sq. m. The number of boarding bridges is 19. There are 64 check-in desks, including 16 self-checking desks.

The architectural and design concept of the terminal is based on the aesthetics of Russian constructivism. Architects from Serbian division of British Bureau RMJM focused on the works of Russian avant-garde artists of the early XX century — Lyubov Popova and Varvara Stepanova. They were the pioneers of the so-called “industrial art,” that is, type of art combining social meanings and practical ideas. So, the architects created the interiors of Terminal B on the basis of simple and clear geometric shapes saturated with bright colors. Two stations of underground interterminal passage stations are also decorated in the same style to create a unified visual space.

Posters and photographs of the pioneer of design and advertising in the USSR Alexander Rodchenko — husband of Varvara Stepanova — are widely presented in the design of Terminal B. The famous photo of A. Rodchenko and one of the most striking examples of his works “The Ladder …” is embodied in the design of the floors of Terminal B in the form of alternating black and white lines.

Arrival hall in the baggage area is decorated with a large graphic portrait of Vladimir Mayakovsky, painted by El Lissitzky to illustrate the poet’s book of poems. The motifs of one of E. Lissitzky’s most famous paintings “Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge” were used in the design of the floor at the entrance to the travel-retail area after the security check area.

The accent in the interiors of Terminal B is “live” digital panels — large-format displays combined into a single system of dynamic visual information. The media system broadcasts remarkable visual images of Russia and national heritage: ballets, museum expositions, historical sights and artifacts of Russian culture. During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, fan areas will be organized in the terminal for viewing matches.

There is a large Duty Paid zone which covers an area of 2600 sq. m. in Terminal B. Passengers can choose and purchase products of various categories and brands: perfumes and cosmetics, clothes and accessories, confectionery and much more. A wide range of products with the symbols of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, traditional national souvenirs and products will be available in stores during the Championship.

Catering areas in terminal B occupy about 4,800 sq. m. For the first time among airports in Russia SVO now has a food court that covers an area of as much as 1.1 thousand sq. m.

There is a VIP-lounge and business-lounges “Rublev” and “Kandinsky” in Terminal B. The lounges are positioned as the best in Europe, the design of their interiors also includes elements of the Russian cultural heritage.

The area of the VIP-lounge is 1717 sq. m. with 160 seats. Interiors are created by the famous Dutch bureau “M + R interior architecture”.

Business-lounge “Rublev” with an area of 2608 sq. m is designed for 456 guests. Interiors are created by the bureau “M + R interior architecture”. “Rublev” offers its guests the longest “all-you-can-eat” buffet table in Europe of 34 m that can showcase cooking performances; it also has a dressing room, the lounge zone, the work area and a separate room for children.

Business-lounge “Kandinsky” with an area of 1521 sq. m. can accommodate up to 300 visitors. The design was developed by “JPA Design” — one of the leaders in creating solutions for premium facilities of hospitality and passenger transportation industry. “Kandinsky” offers its guests a dressing room, the lounge zone, a buffet, a bar, a family hall with a children’s playground, 2 meeting rooms, 5 sleep boxes with separate shower rooms.

Terminal B is to be equipped with an online navigation system for passengers that can be accessed through Sheremetyevo mobile app. A high-speed Wi-Fi network free of charge covers the whole area of the airport, including Terminal B and underground interterminal stations.

For passengers with restricted mobility (PRM) the airport has tactile navigation, duplication of information with Braille, ramps, lifting platforms, special desks, call buttons, induction loops and a “Mercury” lounge designed specifically for PRM.

The new terminal is connected with a 4-storey parking lot for 2,500 vehicles by a pedestrian gallery.

2. Underground interterminal passage (UIP) (investments — $235 million)

Underground interterminal passage (UIP) is a unique project that includes passenger and luggage tunnels with the length of 1936 meters each and two stations. For the first time ever the tunnels were constructed under working runways. The project enabled to unite the whole Sheremetyevo airport under one “roof”. The system of passenger transportation is designed to handle at least 11.5 million passengers a year, and the baggage system — 5.9 million bags per year. Fully automated cable cars developed by Doppelmayr have four carriages, that can seat up to 27 passengers each and transport passengers between terminal complexes within 4 minutes.

The interterminal passage reduced transfer time to 50 minutes. This is especially important for the effective transfer operations of Aeroflot.

3. Cargo-complex “Moscow Cargo” (investments (two stages) — $150 million, first stage — $85 million)

The first stage of the largest in Russia cargo terminal with a capacity of 380,000 tonnes of cargo per year was put into commercial operation in December 2017. The terminal area is 42 300 m2.

Sheremetyevo is expected to handle more than 700 thousand tonnes of cargo annually by 2024. To achieve this goal, the engineering and construction of the second stage of the cargo terminal with a capacity of additional 380 thousand tonnes per year is set to commence in 2018.

“Moscow Cargo” terminal is equipped with an automated cargo handling and storage system which is unique for Russia. It has separate container and bulk storage areas with joint automated operating system.

The new cargo terminal meets all up-to-date requirements for cargo ground handling and thus creates favorable conditions for the further development of the global cargo hub in Sheremetyevo Airport jointly with Volga-Dnepr Group and Aeroflot PJSC.

4. Fuel tank (joint project with “Lukoil”, investments in equal shares — $ 150 million)

The goal of the project is to ensure the supply of aviation fuel for the carriers flying in/from Sheremetyevo, particularly during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The nominal volume of the tank farm is 20,000 m3 with the capability of increasing to 25,000 m3. The design capacity is 1.2 million tonnes of aviation fuel per year. The capacity of the refueling complex will allow simultaneous refueling of up to 14 wide-body aircraft.
