SFO Announces Series of Temporary Runway Closures in 2013 for Construction Work

Mostly Weekend Closures to Accomplish Federally-Mandated Runway Safety Area

SAN FRANCISCO — 2013-01-04 — /travelprnews.com/ — the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced a series of temporary runway closures for 2013 to accomplish construction activity for federally-mandated Runway Safety Areas. These closures will primarily consist of weekend closures of either Runway 28L or 28R, which are the primary runways for arriving flights. Only one runway will be closed at any given time.

The temporary runway closures for 2013 are scheduled as follows:

Runway 28L closed:

  • Friday, January 11th at 10:00pm PST through Monday, January 14th at 8:00am PST
  • Friday, January 18th at 10:00pm PST through Monday, January 21st at 8:00am PST
  • Friday, January 25th at 10:00pm PST through Monday, January 28th at 8:00am PST
  • Tuesday, June 25th at 12:01am PDT through Wednesday, June 26th at 12:59pm PDT

Runway 28R closed:

  • Friday, April 5th at 10:00pm PDT through Monday, April 8th at 8:00am PDT
  • Friday, April 12th at 10:00pm PDT through Monday, April 15th at 8:00am PDT
  • Friday, April 19th at 10:00pm PDT through Monday, April 22nd at 8:00am PDT
  • Friday, April 26th at 10:00pm PDT through Monday, April 29th at 8:00am PDT
  • Thursday, June 27th at 12:01am PDT through Friday, June 28th at 12:59pm PDT

The closures will allow crews to construct new threshold areas, lighting systems, and navigational aids to comply with federal Runway Safety Area (RSA) requirements.  Scheduled dates are subject to change based on weather conditions. This construction activity is expected to result in further runway closures in 2014 as well; more details will be available in summer 2013. The overall Runway Safety Area project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015.

During closures, the arrival rate at SFO will be reduced from 60 aircraft per hour to 30 aircraft per hour. Delays for flights originating within a two-hour radius of SFO are expected to occur during peak travel times. Peak times are between 9:00am-12:00pm and 6:00pm-9:00pm. Travelers are strongly encouraged to contact their respective carriers regarding any potential delays.
