Oakwood Worldwide® to award six students with $15,000 total in scholarships and bursary awards through Howard F. Ruby Scholarship Program

Howard F. Ruby Scholarship Fund Assists Six Children of Company Associates

LOS ANGELES, 2014-8-15 — /Travel PR News/ — Oakwood Worldwide®, the global leader in corporate housing and serviced apartment solutions, is pleased to award six dedicated and exemplary students with $15,000 total in scholarships and bursary awards through the Howard F. Ruby Scholarship Program. The program, which is named after the company founder, has awarded more than $105,000 in scholarships over the past five years to children of Oakwood Worldwide Associates.

This year’s recipients earned scholarships for their exceptional academic achievements and community service:

  • Jodi Elizabeth Rush, daughter of Paul Rush, accounting manager, from Los Angeles, California, was awarded $6,000;
  • Diana and Nicole Torres, daughters of Ana Luisa Cerda, apartment make ready specialist, from Huntington Beach, California, each received $3,000; and
  • Nabor Orlando Lopez, son of Nabor Pelayo Lopez, maintenance, from Huntington Beach, California, was honored with $1,500.

Due to the number of impressive applications that were received, the committee also selected two applicants, Stephanie Arellano, freshman at Northern Arizona University and daughter of Norma Arellano from Phoenix, Arizona, and Joshua Smith, son of Jennifer Smith from Portland, Texas, who will each receive one-time bursary awards of $750 for the Fall 2014 school year.

“It is always such a joy to see the children of our associates pursue higher academic learning and an honor to present them with an award that they all very much deserve,” said Howard Ruby, chairman, founder and chief executive officer of Oakwood Worldwide. “I want to congratulate this year’s award recipients and also sincerely extend my thanks to each student who applied.”

Rush, a senior at Marlborough School, will attend Lewis and Clark in Portland, Oregon, and major in Biochemistry with a minor in Japanese. A life-long member of the Girl Scouts, Rush reached the highest level, the Ambassador Level, and earned bronze and silver awards for community service projects, such as a project to make dresses for young girls in Africa. Rush’s interest in Japanese stems from a month-long trip to Japan to stay with a local family.

Diana Torres aspires to study criminal justice and intends to intern at a law enforcement agency. A senior at Paramount High School, Torres plans to enroll at San Diego State University. She currently volunteers at the St. Francis Medical Center.

Nicole Torres plans to gain a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering at the University of California, Irvine. She aspires to be part of a team that works to improve the world by advancing technology. Like her sister, Nicole volunteers at the St. Francis Medical Center.

A senior at Cimarron Memorial High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, Lopez plans to become the first male member of his family to attend college. Lopez’s attitude toward his education is an admirable one, saying that his plan to pursue a degree is not out of obligation, but rather out of a will and motivation to learn every day.

Recipients of the Howard F. Ruby scholarship awards are recognized for academic achievement and community involvement through volunteer work in the areas of health and human services, education, arts and culture, civic life, community service and environmental preservation. Based on annual reviews by the Howard F. Ruby Scholarship Program Committee, each scholarship may be re-issued annually for a total of $54,000 awarded over four years of college education for these recipients.
