MSC Foundation Strengthens Partnerships and Scientific Capacity in The Bahamas Through Ocean Cay Initiative

(NEWS) GENEVA, Switzerland, 2026-Apr-22 — /Travel PR News/ — Marine conservation initiatives tied to tourism are gaining greater visibility across the Caribbean, as organisations look to combine environmental protection with education and community engagement.

The MSC Foundation has marked one year since the opening of its Marine Conservation Center in The Bahamas, reporting progress across coral restoration, scientific research and public outreach. Located at Ocean Cay, the facility has become a central hub for the Foundation’s conservation work in the region.

According to details shared by the organisation, more than 600 corals have been cultivated in underwater nurseries since the centre opened in April 2025, with over 250 already transplanted onto surrounding reefs. The initiative is part of a broader effort to restore coral ecosystems while improving resilience to rising ocean temperatures.

The centre also supports ongoing collaboration with research institutions, including the University of The Bahamas and the Perry Institute for Marine Science. These partnerships have contributed to expanding coral species diversity through exchange programmes and supporting the development of a national coral gene bank.

Beyond restoration work, the project has placed a strong emphasis on education and training. Over the past year, more than 20 marine science students have participated in hands-on learning programmes, while additional internships and field courses have been delivered in collaboration with regional and international universities.

Public engagement has also been a key component of the initiative. The Marine Conservation Center has welcomed more than 17,000 visitors, offering educational experiences focused on ocean conservation and reef ecosystems. Community-based activities, including beach clean-ups and school programmes in areas such as Bimini, have further extended the project’s reach.

The initiative reflects a broader trend in the tourism sector, where environmental projects are increasingly integrated into destination experiences. By linking conservation with visitor engagement and local education, organisations aim to create more sustainable models that support both ecosystems and communities.

The MSC Foundation has indicated that its work in The Bahamas is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen local capacity in marine science while contributing to global conservation efforts, particularly through its Super Coral Reefs Programme.
