Amadeus technology powers contactless check-in to boarding at Perth Airport in industry-first for Australia

(NEWS) MADRID, 2025-Sep-12 — /Travel PR News/ — Perth Airport is set to become the first airport in Australia to offer a fully automated biometric departure process, following an expanded partnership with Amadeus. Nearly 100 new self-service check-in kiosks and around 40 automated bag drop units will be installed across the airport, all integrated with Amadeus’ biometric capabilities. The technology allows passengers traveling with selected airlines to complete their journey from check-in to boarding using a facial scan, eliminating the need to present passports or boarding passes at each step.

Passengers opting into biometrics at the kiosk will have their identity securely tokenized, enabling fast, contactless validation at bag drop and boarding gates. The streamlined system is designed to reduce waiting times, enhance efficiency, and allow the airport to serve more passengers within the same terminal footprint. Perth Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Scott Woodward, emphasized that the initiative focuses on providing travelers with a smoother and more flexible departure experience while supporting future airport growth.

Sarah Samuel, Senior Vice President, AirOps, APAC at Amadeus, highlighted the scalability of the solution, noting that advances in biometrics and automation can help airports boost passenger capacity without costly infrastructure expansions. The new deployment builds on a decade-long collaboration between Perth Airport and Amadeus, which began in 2015 with the adoption of Amadeus’ cloud-based passenger processing system and expanded in 2022 through biometric trials. The successful rollout represents a major leap forward in digital transformation for Australia’s aviation sector and sets a new benchmark for contactless travel in the region.

The Perth Airport rollout is part of a broader wave of biometric innovation led by Amadeus and its subsidiaries. Earlier this year, MSC Cruises and Vision-Box—an Amadeus company—unveiled the MSC Miami Cruise Terminal, now considered the world’s most advanced cruise terminal and the first to deliver a fully end-to-end biometric journey. At PortMiami, guests can create a secure digital ID through the MSC for Me app, enabling touchless check-in, embarkation, and disembarkation with just a facial scan. Processing up to 36,000 passengers daily, the terminal uses a combination of biometric totems, Seamless Gates®, and real-time digital identity verification to eliminate the need for physical documents, while safeguarding privacy. This landmark project demonstrates how Amadeus’ biometric solutions extend beyond aviation, setting new global standards for efficiency, capacity, and passenger satisfaction across the entire travel and tourism ecosystem.
