Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners Awards Construction Contract for Rehabilitation of Van Nuys Airport’s Main Runway 16R

Van Nuys, California – 2012-10-16 — /travelprnews.com/ — Today, the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) approved a $13,908,464 contract to Security Paving Company, Inc., for rehabilitation of the main runway (16R/34L) at Van Nuys Airport (VNY). The total amount of the project, which includes all cost elements, is estimated at $20,483,076. Ninety percent of the project’s cost will be funded through a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant.

Runway 16R stretches 8,000 feet and is one of two runways at VNY, ranked as one of the nation’s busiest general aviation airports. The project, which includes the rehabilitation of 6,800 feet of asphalt pavement using a combination of asphalt overlay and partial pavement reconstruction, will be phased over three sections of the runway (north, south and center). The project also includes the widening of existing runway shoulders to meet FAA design standards, along with improvements to the aircraft run-up area and repairs to existing, concrete runway pavement.

Through a collaborative effort among airport management and tenants, the rehabilitation project has been designed to minimize operational impacts and maximize improvements to the airfield complex. “VNY plays an integral role in our nation’s air transportation system and is a vital contributor to the Southern California economy,” said VNY Airport Manager, Jess Romo. “It’s a great example of collaboration among key stakeholders in an effort to minimize operational impacts and help preserve the airport’s status as one of the world’s premier general aviation facilities.”

During project work, VNY will operate with a shortened runway length for 65 days, with no less than 5,000 feet available for arrivals and 5,209 feet available for departures. Full runway closures will be limited to 10 days. A series of 26 night closures occurring from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., will take place prior to and after the 24-hour closure dates. Operations on the airport’s 4,000-foot parallel runway will not be impacted.

With today’s BOAC action, Los Angeles World Airports’ staff anticipates work to commence in November 2012 with completion by the end of August 2013.
