2012-09-26 — /travelprnews.com/ — Electric and eclectic, the 2012 Prix Meurice exhibition shows eight key artists on the young French contemporary art scene. They are Claire Adelfang, Alexandre Singh, Nick Devereux, Baptiste Debombourg, Emmanuelle Lainé, Jean-Baptiste Bernadet, Xavier Antin and Mathilde Rosier.
Suggesting a trompe-l’oeil, or a hole in the wall, each work is a self-contained universe; an open window on the world and society, the artist’s practice or the history of art.
Alexandre Singh delivers an enigmatic message using cuttings from The Economist, assembled as a collage on wood. A snapshot of Emmanuelle Lainé’s studio becomes wallpaper, and forms a backdrop to part of the exhibition.
Nick Devereux presents several works including a virtuoso oil painting; Baptiste Debombourg’s composition made from hundreds of staples is informed by The Abduction of the Sabine Women and Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe. Both revisit classics of art history.
On a lighter note, Xavier Antin’s vanitas bring two commonplace objects together in innocent but no less suggestive stagings. Claire Adelfang shows the only video work in the exhibition, documenting her journey on the trail of history.
Closing the exhibition, Jean-Baptiste Bernardet has imagined an original installation using items gleaned from his studio.
They will exhibit from October 9th to 21st in the Salon Castiglione, 8 rue Castiglione from 10:00 a.m to 19:00 p.m.
