Ten Years On Munich Airport Satellite Terminal Continues to Drive Hub Growth and Connectivity
(NEWS) MUNICH, Germany, 2026-Apr-27 — /Travel PR News/ — Airport infrastructure milestones are increasingly being used to highlight the evolution of major European hubs, as operators focus on capacity, efficiency and passenger experience.
At Munich Airport, the Terminal 2 Satellite building is marking ten years of operation, having handled approximately 93 million passengers since opening in April 2016. Developed as part of a joint venture between the airport and Lufthansa, the facility has played a central role in supporting the hub’s long-haul and transfer traffic.
According to a press release shared by the airport, the satellite accounts for around 30% of flight movements within the Terminal 2 system and more than a third of passenger volume, with transfer travellers making up over half of its traffic. The building primarily serves airlines within the Star Alliance network, connecting Munich to destinations across Asia, North America and India.
Designed as Germany’s first midfield terminal, the facility is linked to the main terminal via an automated transport system, allowing passengers to transfer between buildings in around one minute. The concept has been positioned as both operationally efficient and environmentally focused, with reported emissions reductions of around 30% compared to the original Terminal 2 structure.
The development was supported by an investment of approximately €900 million, with construction beginning in 2011. Over the past decade, the terminal has been further upgraded with digital and automated processes, including EasyPASS checkpoints and entry-exit systems aimed at improving passenger flow.
Beyond operational performance, the satellite has been designed to enhance the passenger experience through a mix of retail, dining and lounge facilities. The building includes 15 retail outlets, multiple restaurants and cafés, and a central marketplace inspired by Munich’s Viktualienmarkt. Additional amenities such as lounges, rest areas and panoramic viewing spaces have been integrated to position the facility as a premium transit environment.
Airport officials say the terminal has contributed to Munich’s position as a major European hub, supported by close collaboration with Lufthansa. Future development plans are already under consideration, with further expansion of the Terminal 2 system expected to increase capacity and strengthen long-haul connectivity over the coming years.
