Columbus Zoo Vet Training Program Receives Professional Certification from American College of Zoological Medicine

Powell, Ohio, 2013-05-22 — /travelprnews.com/ — The animal health experts at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium are proud to announce their zoological medicine residency program has received accreditation by the American College of Zoological Medicine. This certification recognizes the high standard of training provided by the program and has been granted to only 23 similar programs worldwide including one at the Wilds, the Zoo’s conservation center and safari park near Zanesville.

The Zoo’s three year residency program provides postdoctoral advanced training in all aspects of zoo and wildlife medicine and surgery, as well as exotic animal husbandry subjects such as nutrition, management and reproduction. Residents in this program train with the veterinary team at both the Zoo and the Wilds.

The residency program is designed to produce specialists in zoo and wild animal medicine and surgery and prepare them for board certification as diplomates in the American College of Zoological Medicine. Diplomate status recognizes expertise in the field of exotic animal medicine and requires completion of a residency program or equivalent training, research, publication, and completion of a comprehensive examination. Columbus Zoo and the Wilds currently employ three veterinarians with diplomate status.
