Caroling at Cloud Gate, Fridays at 6p.m. Nov. 23 – Dec. 21
2012-11-20 — /travelprnews.com/ — Celebrate the holidays in Millennium Park, when Caroling at Cloud Gate returns on Friday evenings from November 23 through December 21, 2012 at 6 PM during the holiday season. This free program, presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) showcases Chicago choral groups and invites visitors to participate in a holiday sing-along.
Now in its seventh season, Caroling at Cloud Gate has become a cherished tradition in Chicago, with hundreds of singers gathering each week in the Park. Following the 50-minute caroling session, everyone is encouraged to skate at Millennium Park’s McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, one of the most popular winter destinations in the city.
Scheduled to perform are:
- Windy City Gay Chorus and Aria – November 23
- Merit Conservatory Choir – November 30
- Chicago Children’s Choir – December 7
- Janet Sutton and The Voices of Acme – December 14
- Apollo Chorus of Chicago – December 21
Kicking off this season of Caroling at Cloud Gate this Friday, the Windy City Gay Chorus and Aria is the flagship of the Windy City Performing Arts, a non-for-profit incorporated in 1983 which has performed with Chicago’s Steppenwolf and Redmoon Theatre companies and participated in the opening of the new modern wing of the Art Institute.
Merit School of Music’s Conservatory Choir (Nov. 30) includes 8th-12th grade students who train in either voice or an instrument at the West Loop school. Since 1979, the Merit experience has inspired young people to achieve their full musical and personal potential through accessible, high-quality music education.
The Chicago Children’s Choir (Dec. 7) is a multi-cultural, multi-racial choral music education organization. Returning to Cloud Gate following a one year absence, the Chicago Children’s Choir provides a unique musical experience for young people, enriching their lives.
Performing for the first time at Cloud Gate is Janet Sutton and The Voices of Acme. Winners of the 2008 How Sweet the Sound Competition, this south side choir has also performed at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at the city’s Chicago Gospel Music Festival.
Wrapping up the caroling season at Cloud Gate, Anish Kapoor’s sculpture affectionately known throughout the city as the Bean, and continuing a multi-year tradition is the Apollo Chorus of Chicago (Dec. 21). The Apollo Chorus is one of the oldest music ensembles in the United States and includes men and women of all ages, races, creeds and occupations.
Millennium Park is located in the heart of downtown Chicago. It is bordered by Michigan Ave. to the west, Columbus Dr. to the east, Randolph St. to the north and Monroe St. to the south. Convenient parking is located in the Millennium Park Garage (entrance on Columbus at Monroe or Randolph) and at the Grant Park North and East Monroe Garages, all located within a short walking distance of Millennium Park.
