Comprising 6,500 hectares, the new NDNR was officially founded on 18th April 2024 following many years of sweat and toil, successfully consolidating various tracts of land to create a single conservation corridor linking the Sterkfontein Nature Reserve in the Free State with the uKhahlamba/Maloti Drakensberg Park in KwaZulu-Natal, a World Heritage Site.  The realisation of this dream is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most significant conservation achievements in recent years and a great win for biodiversity.

The Cavern is a family-friendly resort renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich heritage. Surrounded by indigenous forests and majestic mountain peaks, this charming hotel with Forest Spa offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.  Owned and run by Hilton and Megan Bedingham and Lesley Carte, the hotel was originally founded in 1941 by Megan’s Grandparents Bill and Ruth Carte.  It has been a much-beloved mountain retreat for over 80 years, with many of its  guests returning year after year, forging lasting friendships and creating unforgettable memories.
