Giant-sized watering can showcases tropical plants linked to destinations.
Bristol, UK, 2016-May-24 — /Travel PR News/ — As part of the Chelsea Fringe Festival, Bristol Airport will play host to Cleeve Nursery’s giant-sized watering can in the main check-in area of the terminal from Wednesday for a four week period. What’s believed to be the world’s largest watering can, and a local icon of Cleeve, will be filled with tropical plants from the Nursery which will link to destinations available from Bristol Airport. The can, brightly painted by local street artist Damien Jeffery, will have large bee shaped wrought-iron sculptures made by Strawberry Steel hovering above the display.
The Chelsea Fringe runs from 21 May until 12 June 2016 and is an alternative to the Chelsea Flower Show, celebrating everything to do with gardening, growing, community engagement and nature.
This is the second year Bristol Airport has supported the Chelsea Fringe. In 2015 a honeycomb shaped meadow of wildflowers highlighted the importance of creating bee and pollinator friendly habitats in an urban environment. The hexagonal shapes appeared in various locations around the city. The installation of interlinking and moveable hexagonal planters, designed by River of Flowers, was a joint collaboration with BeeBristol. At the end of 2015’s Chelsea Fringe event the honeycomb wildflower hexagonal planters were donated to community gardening projects around the city.
This year local plant nursery Cleeve Nursery offered to provide the display in the Airport terminal. It consists of the very large watering can filled with tropical indoor plants. This is the third time that Cleeve Nursery has been involved with this alternative flower show. Previously they have filled a parking space on Park Street with over 35 edible plants in pots and last year their pickup truck- planted with crops that rely on bees for pollination, and plants that encourages them – was a huge hit with Chelsea Fringe in Bristol and several other major festivals throughout the city. The planted pickup truck can still be seen at Cleeve Nursery.
The focus of this year’s Fringe will be on inspiring young people to look at plants differently and the countries where plants originate from. At the end of the festival the plants will be donated to a number of local primary schools in close proximity to Bristol Airport.
Jacqui Mills, Bristol Airport’s Public Relations and Community Manager, said:
“We are delighted to be part of Chelsea Fringe for the second year running. It is a great opportunity to be working with Cleeve Nursery, a local company, bringing together the idea of a planted display that will encourage young people to learn about plants in a fun way. For the duration of Chelsea Fringe we encourage families to send us their photographs taken in front of the watering can, and one lucky family will win a fantastic prize. After Chelsea Fringe all plants will be donated to a number of local primary schools where children will be able to continue learning about the countries the plants originate from.”
Alan Down, Joint Owner of Cleeve Nursery said:
“We are delighted to have this opportunity to provide a joint installation with Bristol Airport for Chelsea Fringe in Bristol. Plants play a vital role to life on earth and they have an important place in offsetting our impact here. Indoor plants in particular have repeatedly been shown to reduce stress and enhance health and well-being when placed in the home, office and the workplace. We hope that our installation will set travellers thinking about the role that plants play but also that they will set off on their travels with a smile on their faces!”
