Australian CASA: Drones must be kept away for the Qantas 747 flight to the Illawarra Regional Airport this weekend

WODEN, Australia, 2015-3-6 — /Travel PR News/ — People who fly drones – also known as remotely piloted aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicles – must keep out of temporary restricted airspace that will be in place this weekend for the Qantas 747 flight to the Illawarra Regional Airport.

The temporary restricted airspace will apply from 07:30 to 08:30 on Sunday 8 March 2015.

It will create unoccupied airspace for the last stage of the flight of the Qantas 747-400 City of Canberra into the Illawarra Airport.

The aircraft is coming from Sydney to its new home at the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society.

The temporary restricted airspace covers an eight nautical mile circle around the Illawarra Airport – to Kiama in the south, Macquarie Pass in the west and Mt Kembla in the north. Port Kembla and central parts of Wollongong are inside the restricted area.

It also includes a straight section out to the east over the ocean from central Wollongong which will be the aircraft’s path of arrival.

The temporary restricted airspace is in place from the ground up to 4500 feet above mean sea level.

People in the Illawarra with drones must not fly in the temporary restricted airspace.

Drones must not be operated anywhere near the Illawarra Airport before, during or after the 747 flight. People should not fly drones within 5.5 kilometres of an airport at any time.

CASA will have inspectors present at the Illawarra Airport on Sunday to monitor the safety of the 747 operation.
