Second consecutive Mercury Award for airberlin
BERLIN, 2015-12-16 — /Travel PR News/ — Only the best for our guests: airberlin has won the world’s most prestigious innovation award in the in-flight catering industry. The airline received the Golden Award for its “FliegerCocktail” – created by Berlin’s oldest spirits distillery, Mampe, and available exclusively onboard airberlin flights – at the 34th Mercury Award ceremony in Abu Dhabi. Presented annually by the Sial Group, airberlin picked up the Mercury Award in the “Beverages” category. The airline had already received the Golden Award in the “On Board Service” category at last year’s ceremony, for its diverse range of Sansibar gourmet meals.
Business Class passengers can choose between three different versions of the “FliegerCocktail” in the extensive range of alcoholic beverages: the “Berliner Brise”, “Fliejer uff Eis” and “Fliejerprickel”. Economy Class passengers are served the “Berliner Brise” in a stylish can. Meanwhile, Mampe’s online shop has received orders for the “FliegerCocktail” from airberlin guests around the world.
What makes the “FliegerCocktail” so special? Using fresh apricots and oranges, the annual batch is produced by hand in the Gutsbrennerei Schloss Zinzow distillery in the German region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The remaining ingredients are a well-kept secret. This year, around 800 kilograms of the finest French apricots were halved and processed according to traditional methods, before being preserved in barrels. Three months pass between immersing the apricots in alcohol and filling the last bottle. The trademark Mampe elephant is then attached to the neck of each bottle after it has been filled by hand, corked and sealed.
