2013-08-20 — /travelprnews.com/ — It was only August, but the pastry team at Four Seasons Hotel Austin had an idea for its 2013 Gingerbread Village – a “wonderful, awful idea,” as Dr. Seuss would say.
A beloved annual tradition since the 1980s, the Hotel’s Gingerbread Village in 2013 will be themed to the beloved Dr. Seuss classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Houses and landmarks planned for the Gingerbread WhoVillage will include a Mt. Crumpet, Cindy Lou Who’s House and a giant sugary Town Center Christmas tree. In total, the 2013 Village will feature ten mouth-watering houses made entirely out of edible materials.
In addition to the houses, several smaller accessories – such as the Welcome to Whoville sign and a train designed to look like the Grinch’s stolen bag of toys – will also dot the cartoon landscape.
Though miniature compared to the originals, each house can take the pastry chefs up to 30 hours to construct due to the intricacy required to replicate the unique angles and designs of the Who houses.
Luckily all that hard work isn’t without reward since each house is sold to a sponsor, with proceeds donated to the Seton Shivers Cancer Center. Nearly USD 50,000.00 has been raised since 2005 through the sale of Gingerbread houses to individuals and businesses in Austin and around the country.
On display starting November 26, 2013, the Gingerbread WhoVillage may be viewed 24 hours a day through January 1, 2014. The Hotel will also host several Community Open Houses featuring complimentary hot apple cider and sweet Grinch-themed treats, photos with Santa and opportunities to speak with the Hotel’s pastry chefs about Gingerbread house facts and fun behind-the-scenes details.
