This open-sourced list of questions acts as an easy-to-follow essential tool for professionals in the travel industry providing all the questions we should be asking and be prepared to answer — encouraging all to be inquisitive, stay curious, and keep asking more questions about sustainability.

The guide poses a series of thought-provoking questions and the rationale behind them to support travel agents and representatives in seeking a deeper understanding of holistic sustainability, converting, in turn, to more responsible trips. The guide is broken down into seven impact categories: Environment, Economy, Conservation, Culture & Heritage, Community, Accessibility & Inclusion, Measurement & Data.

“We chose these key areas of measurable impact, in line with The Conscious Travel Foundation’s holistic approach to positive impact tourism,” says Maudie Tomlinson.

Accommodation providers will find these insights into the types of questions the trade will increasingly be asking especially helpful in light of the new directives and governance coming into play, such as with the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Encouraging hoteliers to invest time, energy and resources into transparent report on their real environmental and social impact will better serve customers, companies and climate solutions.

‘Aligning your value chain with your values’

Hotel owners, General Managers and marketing teams are encouraged to make a more conscious effort to measure what they are doing well and identify where operational improvements can be made. By interrogating their supply chains, implementing small changes and capturing data more meticulously, they can have the answers at the ready, backed by data and science, when the hard questions in sustainability are posed.
