Taste of Sonoma comes to the Makena Beach & Golf Resort’s Molokini Bar & Grille with Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo

Wailea-Makena, 2013-10-08 — /travelprnews.com/ — The Makena Beach & Golf Resort’s Molokini Bar & Grille continues its monthly Food & Wine Education Series on Thursday October 26, 2013 at  6:30 PM with a Taste of Sonoma. This month, Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo returns to the Makena with three wines from Sonoma County. In addition to a cooking demonstration, Executive Chef Marc McDowell prepared three tasting dishes to accompany the wine. The evening will also feature live entertainment and is offered at only $40 per person, plus tax and gratuity.

Sonoma County, though twice as large makes about a half the amount of wine as the popular Napa Valley wine region. However with a larger region, Sonoma features more diversity with various soils and climates, allowing for more diverse and complex wines.

The pairings for the night include Alexander Valley’s Roth Estate 2011 Sauvignon Blanc paired with chilled mussels tossed in blood orange juice. The wine’s crisp and juicy finish will complement the citrus of the oranges and saltiness of the fresh mussels in this tasting dish.

Red Car’s 2011 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is paired with Hawaiian sea bass topped with a tomato, olive tapenade and sweet peppers. Described as a cool vintage, the Pinot Noir is made from grapes of the cool-climated Sonoma coast and features aromas of bright cherries, herbs and spices with a hint of mustiness. It’s medium body and fresh acidity bodes well with the fresh delicate taste of the fish, and it’s sweet and tart accompaniments.

Mantanzas Creek Bennett Valley 2010 Merlot is paired with Maui Lavender infused Chicken with a sage and lavender jus. Though the 2010 growing season for the Alexander Valley and Knights Valley region was colder than average, this vintage still shows great fruit expression with aromas of dry cherries and fresh blueberries, bittersweet chocolate and notes of cedar and tobacco. The wine’s primary blueberry accents pairs well with the fresh Maui Lavender and sage flavors of the tasting dish.

Seating is limited, and reservations are required.
