San Diego International Airport is the overall winner for the entire Americas
SAN DIEGO – 2013-02-14 — /travelprnews.com/ — The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority is pleased to announce that San Diego International Airport (SDIA) has been named the Overall Winner of the first heat of the sixth international Routes Airport Marketing Awards. It is the first time the airport has won such an award.
Route Americas, the largest route development event in the entire Americas, recognized SDIA for its work with four separate airlines to increase route service from San Diego. In 2012, the Airport Authority inaugurated service to Tokyo, Orlando and Washington, DC, and expanded service to Hawaii and Mexico. In all, the Airport Authority added ten new routes in 2012.
Airports were broken down by passenger count into three categories: Over 20 Million, 4 – 20 Million and Under 4 Million. San Diego International Airport was named as the winner from the 4 – 20 Million Passengers category, beating out Tampa International Airport and Arturo Merino Benitez International in Santiago, Chile, among others. SDIA was also named the Overall Winner for the event.
Hampton Brown, Director of Air Service Development, received the award on behalf of the Airport Authority, saying, “We are absolutely delighted to pick up the Overall Winner award in the Americas heat of the prestigious Routes Airport Marketing Awards. We thank our airline partners for the investments they have made in our community.”

San Diego provided an excellent submission which detailed a straightforward approach to air service development. Partnering with four airlines—Spirit, US Airways, Alaska and Japan Airlines—for new air services in 2012 is a fantastic achievement.”
As Overall Winner of this regional heat of the Routes Marketing Awards, San Diego International Airport will be automatically shortlisted for the World Routes Airport Marketing Awards, which will be held in Las Vegas, October 5 – 8, 2013. San Diego International Airport will go up against the Overall Winner from Routes Asia 2013, Routes Africa 2013 and Routes Europe 2013.
