(PRESS RELEASE) OAKLAND, CA, 2025-May-7 — /Travel PR News/ —Oakland International Airport (OAK) has completed its highly anticipated Terminal 1 Check-In Counter Replacement Project, unveiling a modernized check-in lobby designed to enhance the passenger experience. The revamped lobby now boasts contemporary finishes, new lighting, and a fresh aesthetic that brightens the space for travelers departing from OAK.

The project, spearheaded by Turner Construction with design by HNTB, marks another milestone in the airport’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its facilities and improve service for passengers.

“We are excited to complete the Terminal 1 check-in counter replacement, a critical step in modernizing our 1962 facility,” said Craig Simon, Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland. “This renovation enhances the pre-security area, creating a more welcoming and efficient space for our passengers. Together with our other recent improvements, this is just one of many initiatives designed to elevate the overall travel experience at OAK.”

The renovation involved replacing the check-in counters and overhead soffit, installing new LED lighting, and repainting the lobby ceiling and back walls. The airlines operating from Terminal 1 at OAK, including Hawaiian Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Volaris Airlines/Volaris El Salvador, Sun Country Airlines, Advanced Air, and Viva Aerobus, have all benefited from the improved check-in area.

The construction was completed in four phases to minimize disruption to passengers and airlines. Temporary relocations were made as individual stations were renovated, ensuring minimal impact on operations.

Approximately 30 percent of the project improvements were carried out by workers from the Port’s Local Business Area (LBA), which includes Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Furthermore, the Port of Oakland exceeded its participation goals for Very Small Business Enterprises (VSBE), with nearly 75 percent of the project work performed by smaller, local firms.

In addition to the Terminal 1 check-in renovations, OAK has also introduced 13 new restaurants and five new retail stores, with more to come. The terminal has also received new furniture and flooring, and the ongoing restroom renovation project continues to improve facilities for passengers.
