London City Airport on Mission to Reduce Carbon Emissions

2013-03-11 — /travelprnews.com/ — London City Airport has been recognised for its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.  The only airport in the city of London, it has become just the fourth in the UK to become Airport Carbon Accredited by the only independent, institutionally-endorsed carbon standard for airports.

LCY has been awarded Level 1 accreditation (‘Mapping’), reflecting its efforts to understand the carbon output of the business and to implement a plan to reduce it.

With almost all of the 6,000 tonnes of carbon emissions the airport currently produces coming from gas and electricity, the key steps identified centre around reducing energy consumption.  Examples include installing low wattage equipment with automatic standby functions and motion sensor-controlled lighting.  The airport is also investing in a new building management system, enabling centrally-controlled temperature and lighting in all public areas.

Gary Hodgetts, Director of Technical Operations at London City Airport said:  “We are proud to have been recognised by Airport Carbon Accreditation for our work in this area. We have identified a number of ways in which we can reduce our carbon output and will be implementing initiatives in the coming months, engaging our workforce across all areas to work together and create a more energy-efficient business.

“Individual airlines are each responsible for the emissions generated by their aircraft.  We are, however, also working closely with our airline partners to effect change where we can, such as through reducing unnecessary fuel burn, and we will continue to look for new ways to make improvements.”

Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally-endorsed carbon management certification standard specifically designed for airports.  The step-by-step process encourages airports to reduce their carbon emissions with the ultimate goal of carbon neutral operations.

London City Airport (LCY) is the only London airport situated in London itself, just three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End and linked to all via the Docklands Light Railway.
Infrastructure improvements in 2011 catered for 3 million passengers and 70,000 movements, while in 2012 LCY celebrated its millionth flight, 36 millionth passenger and 25 years of operation. Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally-endorsed, carbon management certification standard specifically designed for airports. The programme independently assesses and recognises the efforts of airports to manage and reduce their carbon emissions with four levels of award: ‘Mapping’, ‘Reduction’, ‘Optimisation’ & ‘Neutrality’. Airport Carbon Accreditation is an independent programme administered by WSP Environment & Energy, in association with ACI EUROPE and ACI ASIA-PACIFIC. Since its launch in 2009, it has been endorsed by ECAC and EUROCONTROL and received support from the European Commission and ICAO.
