Houston Airport System’s Aviation Club Grants scholarship Assistance to Students

2013-05-23 — /travelprnews.com/ — Just six months after its formation, the Houston Airport System’s Aviation Club has already granted scholarship assistance to four members of its inaugural class. The four students from Sterling High School were each awarded a $2,600 scholarship at a celebratory event held on May 16, 2013.

“Programs like the Houston Aviation Club help to ensure that our city will have a talented work force moving forward into the future,” said Houston Mayor Annise Parker. “Houston is known around the world as “Space City” but it’s going to take hard work and planning to ensure that we maintain that reputation in the future. Programs like the Aviation Club help us turn that goal into a reality.”

Launched in October 2012, the Aviation Club encourages students to explore possible careers in the fields of aviation and aerospace. Interested students from Sterling High School and Carnegie Vanguard High School are given an opportunity to network with leaders from the aerospace and aviation industry.

Students also take part in various informational field trips to locations such as the Johnson Space Center and Ellington Airport, in order to gain a firsthand viewpoint of the various occupations that are discussed throughout the program.

In its inaugural session, the Aviation Club attracted almost 50 students from the two participating High Schools.

The scholarship assistance to the four students was made possible by donations from several Houston area companies and educational institutions. Two of the scholarship recipients, Abril De La Cruz and Jesse Soto from Sterling High School, were also awarded summer internships.

“This program encourages students to take an active role in the shaping of their own future,” says Houston Aviation Director Mario Diaz. “The aviation and aerospace industries offer students a wide array of different career paths and the Aviation Club helps to bring these options into focus.”

The following students were recognized at the 2013 Scholarship Awards Event:

Abril De La Cruz – Sterling High School
Jose Martinez – Sterling High School
Cesilia Ramirez – Sterling High School
Jesse Soto – Sterling High School

The Aviation Club expects to begin activities with its second class in September 2013. Additional information on the Aviation Club itself can be found on the airport system’s Web site at www.fly2houston.com/aviationclubfaq.
