Heathrow partners with the London Philharmonic Orchestra

  • Orchestra will perform for a host of occasions throughout 2013
  • 48% of passengers like to listen to music when travelling, whilst only 8% actually do

2013-01-16 — /travelprnews.com/ — Heathrow is partnering with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to give many of the 70 million passengers a memorable experience before travelling during 2013. The orchestra will perform in departures to give a unique send-off with a host of performances throughout the year.

New research reveals that a quarter (25%) of passengers feel nervous before a flight. Music is proven as popular tool to promote relaxation, and although new research* from Heathrow shows that just under half of passengers (48%) listen to music to help them to relax in daily lives, only 8% remember to bring music with them to help them relax before travelling.

Dr Harry Witchel, a Senior Physiologist at Brighton and Sussex medical school and editor of music psychology book ‘You are what you hear’ suggests music is present 37% of our lives time during waking hours. Of those times when music is present, people report that music positively influences their emotions 64% of the time.

Dr Witchel reports that listening to music has positive emotional and physical effects on the body. He comments that music “profoundly effects people’s mood and is very strongly correlated with a feeling that it is special.”

Helen Searl, Corporate Relations Manager for the London Philharmonic Orchestra said

“We loved seeing the look on people’s faces when we performed at Heathrow during the Olympics and Christmas last year, we don’t think they were expecting a 20 piece orchestra to greet them at check in. We are delighted to be asked back to play for passengers in this unique and exciting location.”

The London Philharmonic Orchestra regularly tours internationally and so the partnership with Heathrow is especially fitting. The Orchestra performs the great traditional repertoire alongside world premieres and new commissions, performing with passion, energy and dedication to the highest artistic standard.

A number of ensembles from the Orchestra including a 20 player ensemble and a string quintet will perform for key celebration dates throughout the year. These include a celebration of the Chelsea Flower Show as well as showcasing some of the repertoire the London Philharmonic Orchestra performs at the Royal Festival Hall, the Orchestra’s home on London’s South Bank.

Carol Stokes, Head of Passenger Experience at Heathrow said:

“Passengers tell us that they love live music. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with the London Philharmonic Orchestra during 2013. The LPO’s series of live terminal concerts will make the journey through Heathrow even better – more relaxed, more vibrant and so much more memorable.”
