ATLANTA – 2012-11-03 — /travelprnews.com/ — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is taking steps toward offering free Wi-Fi access as early as fall 2013. The Airport is reducing the cost of Wi-Fi service and planning to upgrade its public wireless Internet system to accommodate an expected increase in use by tech-savvy passengers.
Starting November 1, Hartsfield-Jackson will offer Wi-Fi services at a reduced daily rate of $4.95; the new, lower rate will remain in effect until the fees are eliminated in 2013. With these changes, the Airport moves away from intermediary wireless Internet service providers and begins fully operating and maintaining its wireless system.
“I am pleased to announce that Hartsfield-Jackson is one step closer to offering truly free Wi-Fi,” said Aviation General Manager Louis Miller. “This initiative builds upon our commitment to improving the overall Airport experience for all customers. As a global aviation hub, Hartsfield-Jackson connects hundreds of thousands of passengers with communities worldwide every day. Free Wi-Fi will make it easier for these passengers to conduct their professional and personal business during their time at the Airport.”
Since 2005, Hartsfield-Jackson has been a popular “hot spot,” allowing users to access wireless Internet services from virtually any point inside the Airport, including the underground Transportation Mall.
When passengers turn on their Internet-ready devices, the Airport’s Wi-Fi system displays a splash page that gives them free access to basic information — including the Airport’s website (www.atlanta-airport.com/) and websites for airlines and rental car companies — and the option to pay $4.95 for full Internet access for 24 hours.
“During and after the system upgrades, Wi-Fi users will continue to experience the same reliable and secure Internet service that they have enjoyed for many years,” said Roosevelt Council Jr., Aviation deputy general manager and chief financial officer. “We have listened to what customers want and are putting in the infrastructure to ensure that the service will be everything they expect and need.”
