Charlotte, North Carolina, 2021-Nov-24 — /Travel PR News/ — The 14th Runway 5K raised more than $34,800 for CLT’s Airport Opportunity Scholarship at Central Piedmont Community College. The scholarship was created in 2018 to help promote careers in aviation as well as economic opportunities in Charlotte.
Over the past four years, six students from Charlotte high schools have received more than $88,000 in scholarship funds.
“We are honored to support these young people as they pursue their educational goals and we value the relationship we have built with the Bridge program,” said Stuart Hair, director of Economic & Community Affairs. “It’s so exciting to offer community members an opportunity to walk and run on our airfield each year and we are thrilled that so many continue to support this fundraising event.”
Each opportunity scholarship recipient participates in CPCC’s six-week Summer Bridge program, designed to help teens transition from high school to college. Students are assigned academic advisors who help guide them throughout their classes. The scholarship covers their tuition, books, and provides internship opportunities.
The 2021 Runway 5K on Oct. 23 was sold out with 1,500 runners and walkers. The race was staged for the first time entirely on Runway 18R/36L and its network of taxiways. COVID-19 safety guidelines were incorporated throughout the event.
The overall winner was Dylan Lowery of Charlotte with a time of 15:19. Abigail Robinson of Charlotte was the top female runner crossing the finish line at 20:13. Both were awarded 25,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles for flights. The 15th Runway 5K will take place in Oct. 2022.
