Villa Igiea Integrates Contemporary Art and Luxury Hospitality Through Claire Fontaine Exhibition and Sicilian Matriarchy Experience
(IN SHORT) From March 7 to May 10, Villa Igiea in Palermo presents We Are All Whatever Singularities by the feminist collective Claire Fontaine, an exhibition inspired by Giorgio Agamben’s philosophical concept of singularity. Through Warhol-referencing silkscreens, sculptural interventions, and luminous installations, the show explores identity, digital interconnectedness, memory, and resistance within contemporary culture. The hotel expands the artistic experience with Sicilian Matriarchy, an exclusive itinerary celebrating women’s influence in art, history, craftsmanship, and music across Palermo. Together, the exhibition and curated experiences position Villa Igiea as a cultural hub where contemporary art, heritage, and luxury hospitality converge.
(PRESS RELEASE) PALERMO, Italy, 2026-Mar-3 — /Travel PR News/ — Villa Igiea in Palermo becomes a platform for contemporary artistic reflection this spring as the conceptual and feminist collective Claire Fontaine presents We Are All Whatever Singularities, on view from March 7 to May 10. The exhibition unfolds across the hotel’s communal spaces, weaving contemporary art into the fabric of one of Sicily’s most storied hospitality landmarks.
The title draws from philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s notion of “singularity,” a concept describing each individual as a being of potential, capable of both good and evil. Through this lens, Claire Fontaine invites viewers to consider identity not as fixed, but as fluid and contingent — shaped by connection, context, and collective experience.
At the heart of the exhibition are three silkscreens referencing the iconic portraits of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol. Rendered in varied chromatic schemes, the images are partially obscured by painted inscriptions. These phrases gesture toward mutable identities: “whatever singularities,” “ready-made artists,” and digitally networked beings simultaneously united and separated by technology. The effect is both homage and disruption — a meditation on authorship, image culture, and the fragmentation of self in the digital age.
The exhibition culminates in two sculptural gestures. Brickbat, carved from Selinunte stone, transforms a renowned text by Vincenzo Tusa into an unreadable tuff block, turning scholarship into monument while questioning permanence and legibility. Outdoors, Luminous Fountain commemorates a departed friend through radiant light installations reminiscent of festive illuminations used during Sicilian patron saint celebrations — a visual cycle of memory, life, and renewal.
By hosting the exhibition, Villa Igiea reinforces its evolving cultural identity, positioning itself not only as a luxury retreat but as a meeting point between art, critical thought, and refined hospitality.
Sicilian Matriarchy: A Curated Journey Through Palermo
In dialogue with the exhibition, Rocco Forte Hotels introduces Sicilian Matriarchy, an itinerary inspired by the legendary Donna Franca Florio and designed exclusively for Villa Igiea guests. The program offers up to four immersive experiences celebrating women’s influence across art, history, craftsmanship, and music.
The journey begins with a visit to Claire Fontaine’s atelier in Palermo’s historic centre, where guests can engage directly with the artists in conversation about contemporary cultural and feminist themes.
Next, participants explore the Norman Palace and Palatine Chapel at Fondazione Federico II, reflecting on the stories of four queens named Costanza whose lives left a literary and historical imprint.
The third experience enters an embroidery atelier devoted to preserving traditional Sicilian craftsmanship through sustainable production. Founder Carolina Guthman shares her perspective as a modern matriarch shaping heritage for the present.
The final encounter is a private chamber music concert staged in a Liberty-style palazzo, where four young musicians — founders of an international Academy of Fine Arts — revive the energy and elegance of the Belle Époque.
The Sicilian Matriarchy itinerary can be tailored from one to four experiences and remains exclusive to hotel guests. For reservations: Concierge Villa Igiea

About Claire Fontaine
Founded in Paris in 2004 by Fulvia Carnevale and James Thornhill, Claire Fontaine has lived and worked in Palermo since 2017. Their practice challenges the commercialization of artistic authorship and resists the homogenization of cultural production.
At the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale, titled Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere, the collective’s seminal neon series took center stage with installations across the Giardini and Arsenale, including a monumental display of 60 suspended neons in the Gaggiandre. Their work also appeared in the Vatican Pavilion exhibition With Your Eyes, staged within the women’s prison of Giudecca.
Monographs and critical studies, including Foreigners Everywhere and Newsfloor, as well as Anita Chari’s Claire Fontaine, a User’s Manual, further examine their philosophical and artistic position. In 2025, the collective received the Italian Council award for the project Show Less, with presentations in London and future iterations planned in Rome.
