Chicago City presents the summer season of Chicago City Markets

The market season kicks off on Thursday, May 9, at Daley Plaza featuring the unveiling of the winning design of the COUNTRY Financial® Reusable Bag Contest

Chicago, IL, 2019-Mar-23 — /Travel PR News/ — The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is pleased to present the summer season of Chicago City Markets. Chicago City Markets sell fresh seasonal produce, flowers, prepared foods, unique Chicago-made products and rare finds – at Chicago’s longest running farmers market on Daley Plaza, the historic Maxwell Street Market and a dozen more community markets in neighborhoods across Chicago. A complete list of city-run markets, along with dates and times are listed below and at chicagocitymarkets.us.

“Chicago City Markets are farmers markets and much more,” said Mark Kelly, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “Our markets provide residents with access to fresh and healthy food – and unique Chicago-made products and other merchandise – but they also bring communities together, many offering live music and other cultural activities.”

The official kickoff of the Chicago City Markets summer season will take place on Thursday, May 9, at 9am at the Daley Plaza City Market. Among the activities, COUNTRY Financial® will announce the winner of the 12th Annual Reusable Bag Design Contest and will distribute free, reusable bags to market goers. The winning student will receive a scholarship prize and their art will appear on thousands of reusable canvas bags distributed at Chicago City Market locations. The theme for 2019 is “Growing a Green Future.” In order to be considered, artists must follow the theme and include the phrase “2019 Chicago City Markets” within their design. All entries must be submitted no later than 4pm CST, April 8, 2019.

For more information on how to enter and official contest rules visit, countryfarmersmarkets.com. All bag designs entered will also be on display in the lobby of the Daley Center (50 W. Washington St.) beginning May 9 through May 17. The City Market at Daley Plaza will be open from 7am to 2pm and will also feature visiting vendors from the Maxwell Street Market.

The Maxwell Street Market (800 S. Desplaines St.) is a year-round Chicago tradition of bargains and bargaining with an international flavor. The 106-year-old historic market, open year-round on Sundays, 9am–3pm, offers an eclectic mix of foods and finds—including fresh produce, furniture, clothing, tools, garden plants, collectibles and rare finds. It is also renowned for the best, authentic Mexican- and Latin-style street food in Chicago, with favorites including: tamales, banana leaf wrapped tamals, tacos, quesadillas with fresh handmade corn tortillas, elotes and corn cakes. Beverage choices include soft drinks, horchatas and other fruit flavored drinks.  For the sweet tooth, market goers can enjoy sorbet, funnel cakes, baked goods and Mangonadas served in a large cup with layers of mango sorbet and mango slices drizzled with lime, chamoy and chili powder. Chicago City Markets take place in neighborhoods across the city from Division Street to Roseland, downtown to Austin. Many markets serve communities with limited access to fresh produce and areas designated low-income, low-access by the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA). This year, most of the City of Chicago-managed market locations will accept LINK through a partnership with Link Up Illinois, an Experimental Station program. The Link Match incentive (previously know as double value) gives a matching $1 coupon for each dollar spent with a Link card. Visit linkupil.org for more information. Link Up Illinois coupons can only be spent on fruits and vegetables. Coupons are not redeemable for cash or change.

The City of Chicago-managed markets opening in May are the Daley Plaza Farmers Market at 50 W. Washington St. opening on Thursday, May 9; the Division Street Farmers Market at Division St. and Dearborn Pkwy. opening on Saturday, May 11; and the Federal Plaza Farmers Market at Adams St. and Dearborn Pkwy. opening on Tuesday, May 14. Most community markets open in June and July. Maxwell Street Market operates year-round on Sundays.
