(PRESS RELEASE) EDMONTON, 2025-Apr-30 — /Travel PR News/ — Carolynne Ross, a dedicated volunteer at Edmonton International Airport (YEG), has recently achieved an incredible milestone, logging her 10,000th hour of service. What began 23 years ago with an ad seeking volunteers in a community newspaper has evolved into a rewarding journey of helping passengers and ensuring a smooth, stress-free airport experience.

With a background in nursing and extensive experience as a government nursing consultant, Carolynne felt a deep connection to helping others. Her involvement in emergency response exercises at the airport left a lasting impression, and when she saw the call for volunteers, she knew it was the perfect fit. Today, she remains a vital part of YEG’s Airport Volunteer Ambassador team, continuing to offer her time and expertise to travelers.

Carolynne’s role as a volunteer is diverse and essential. She assists passengers with directions, provides crucial information about airlines, gates, taxis, and security, and remains vigilant in reporting any issues that could impact the safety or convenience of travelers. Her eye for detail also extends to maintaining the airport’s environment by addressing maintenance concerns such as spills or broken fixtures.

“What I love most about volunteering at the airport is no two days are ever the same,” Carolynne says. “I feel most fulfilled when I see a passenger breathe a sigh of relief when I guide them through some of the airport processes, like checking in or finding security.”

For many, airports can be overwhelming, especially for first-time flyers or those rushing to make a tight connection. Carolynne’s calming presence and helpful nature make her an invaluable resource for those navigating the often-stressful journey.

Throughout her 10,000 hours, Carolynne has gathered numerous memorable experiences. One particularly heartwarming moment involved assisting a young traveler with their homework, answering airport-related questions and giving them a personalized tour of the terminal. Another unforgettable experience was a marriage proposal from a passenger, which she humorously recounts as one of her more unusual shifts.

In addition to her direct support of travelers, Carolynne plays a crucial role in mentoring new volunteers. She welcomes recruits, participates in the volunteer shadowing program, and even contributed to writing the airport’s volunteer training manual.

“We sincerely appreciate Carolynne’s dedication and gift of time to Edmonton International Airport,” said Myron Keehn, President & CEO of YEG. “She truly makes an impact on our team, fellow volunteers, and countless passengers. We are honoured that Carolynne, and so many other volunteers, choose to give their time, elevating the airport experience for so many people.”

Carolynne has no intention of slowing down. She views volunteering as an opportunity to give back, continuously learn, and connect with others. Through her dedication, she has made the airport a more welcoming place for thousands of passengers and continues to inspire fellow volunteers with her passion for service.

YEG’s Airport Volunteer Ambassador program has been a cornerstone of the airport community since 1992, with volunteers logging over 225,000 hours. Currently, YEG has 58 active volunteers. In addition to the volunteer program, YEG’s Pet Therapy Program, in partnership with the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta, features 11 pet therapy teams that volunteer their time to bring comfort to travelers.
