YVR Deploys First-of-Its-Kind AI-Powered Sensor to Enhance Traffic Flow and Sustainability
(IN SHORT) Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has deployed an AI-powered sensor system to enhance traffic flow and support sustainable infrastructure development. The new technology, developed by MistyWest, will classify 13 vehicle types and provide data to inform future infrastructure projects, including the Moray Bridge replacement. This initiative, in collaboration with Innovate B.C., reflects YVR’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and improving the efficiency of intermodal transportation.
(PRESS RELEASE) VANCOUVER, 2025-May-2 — /Travel PR News/ —Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is thrilled to announce the deployment of a cutting-edge AI-powered sensor system at a key access point to Sea Island, marking a major step in the integration of advanced technology to improve transportation and traffic flow. This innovative solution, developed by Vancouver-based MistyWest, uses proprietary MistyVision technology to analyze and categorize traffic patterns, supporting YVR’s commitment to sustainability and intermodal transportation.
As one of the world’s leading airports, YVR understands the importance of being more than just a hub for air travel; it strives to be an intermodal center that efficiently moves people, goods, and services. By incorporating AI-driven sensors, YVR is advancing its ability to streamline transportation, from the airport to surrounding infrastructure.
MistyWest’s AI technology will classify 13 distinct vehicle types prioritized by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MOTT), providing critical insights to help inform long-term infrastructure planning. One of the key outcomes of this technology will be to guide the future design of the Moray Bridge replacement and other important roadway projects.
Additionally, this AI-powered solution will assist in more accurate reporting for Scope 3 carbon emissions, offering up-to-date data on traffic trends and enabling more effective forecasting. By leveraging this data, YVR is furthering its sustainability goals while maintaining its competitive edge as a global gateway.
“We are excited to bring this breakthrough technology to YVR through our work with MistyWest and Innovate B.C.,” said a YVR spokesperson. “By incorporating MistyWest’s AI-powered sensor technology, we can not only improve traffic flow but also ensure more sustainable and informed decision-making for future infrastructure needs.”
This project is part of YVR’s participation in the Integrated Marketplace, an initiative delivered by Innovate B.C. and designed to support the development and implementation of innovative, made-in-B.C. solutions. As the first testbed for this initiative, YVR continues to lead the way in supporting local businesses and fostering community benefits.
