(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 2025-Jun-12 — /Travel PR News/ — Wizz Air marked a landmark achievement today at Rome Fiumicino Airport, celebrating the transportation of its 100 millionth passenger in Italy since launching operations in 2004. This milestone underscores Italy’s pivotal role as the airline’s largest market by capacity and highlights Rome Fiumicino as the vibrant centre of Wizz Air’s activity on the peninsula.

During a special event at the departure gate for Flight W6 408 to Málaga, travelers enjoyed complimentary refreshments and a celebratory cake, while the milestone passenger was presented with a €500 travel voucher valid on any Wizz Air route. In addition, on 10 June only, the airline is offering a one-day-only 10 percent discount on all flights to and from Italy. Further festivities will take place in the streets of Rome on 17 June to honour this achievement.

“Andras Rado, our Head of Communications, remarks, ‘Reaching 100 million passengers in Italy reflects the trust travelers place in Wizz Air and affirms our growth strategy here. With Italy as one of our most important markets, we will continue to expand our presence and connectivity from Rome Fiumicino, linking the country to key destinations across Europe and beyond.’”

In the past year alone, Wizz Air operated more than 91,000 flights in and out of Italy—an 11.6 percent increase over 2023—with a punctuality rate of 99.5 percent, carrying over 18 million passengers. Today’s tally of 100 million travelers is nearly twice the population of Italy.

Rome Fiumicino, one of only twelve airports worldwide to earn a five-star Skytrax rating and recently ranked among the Top 10 airports globally, serves as Wizz Air’s most significant Italian hub. From here, the airline flies 60 routes to 25 countries and, for summer 2025, has boosted frequency on high-demand European and Mediterranean services, including London, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon and classic Greek island routes like Corfu, Mykonos, Santorini and Zakynthos.

Federico Scriboni, Director of Aviation Business Development at Aeroporti di Roma, adds, “We’re proud that Wizz Air chose Fiumicino for this national milestone. Their continued investment in infrastructure—such as the new Training Center opened in October 2024—and operational growth highlights Fiumicino’s strategic importance to both Italy’s air traffic and to Wizz Air’s network.”

With over 600 new jobs in Rome and a fleet of thirteen environmentally advanced Airbus A321neo aircraft based locally, Wizz Air now operates more than 200 routes connecting Italy to 80 destinations in 30 countries, offering over 13 million seats. These figures reinforce Italy’s status as Wizz Air’s primary market and confirm Rome Fiumicino as one of its most dynamic and strategic bases in Europe.

According to CAPA’s Centre for Aviation Awards for Excellence (2022–2024), Wizz Air leads global and European carriers in CO₂ emissions intensity per revenue passenger kilometre.
