Music, dance and the arts usher in the fall season on Lanai

2013-09-02 — /travelprnews.com/ — Uhane Pohaku Na Moku O Hawaii, in partnership with Four Seasons Resorts Lanai, announces the fourth bi-annual Ho’okupu Hula No Lanai Cultural Festival October 4-5, 2013.  The complimentary festival, meaning “a gift of hula to Lanai,” joins together hula halau from around the world who have been influenced by Hawaiian culture and whose goal is to preserve, perpetuate and to share the aloha spirit.  In addition to Filipino, Samoan, and Micronesian dance performances, halau from Japan, Mexico, Okinawa, Oahu, Kauai, the Big Island, Maui and Lanai will participate.

“The fourth Ho’okupu Hula No Lanai Cultural Festival will be filled with embracing aloha,” says Debbie Ryder, festival founder and executive director.  “The event will be in tribute to Uncle George Naope, who was the compass of which I created the road map that connected people from the four corners of the earth to make this memorable event possible.  ‘Ike honua, meaning sense of place and pathways, including a commitment to preserve the delicate balance with the deepest gratitude for life and protect it for generations to come.”

Throughout the two-day event, guests will be treated to an array of cultural experiences, ranging from poi pounding demonstrations to lomilomi, canoe lashing techniques and Hawaiian navigational methods.  Additionally, the event will feature musical performances by three-time Grammy Award winner Cyril Pahinui, Darren Benitez, Hawaiian duo Joni DeMello and Liz Morales, and revered cultural practitioner, composer and musician Leiohu Ryder.
