The expansion follows the award of a seven-year ground handling license by the Ministry of Transportation of the State of Hesse, allowing Swissport to offer a range of services including passenger handling, baggage services, and cargo operations. Frankfurt will soon become Swissport’s largest site in Germany and a key hub in Europe.
(PRESS RELEASE) Zurich, Switzerland, 2025-Feb-11 — /Travel PR News/ — Swissport International has officially launched its ground handling operations at Frankfurt Airport, marking a significant milestone in its expansion. This new venture at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs will see Swissport steadily growing its customer base and workforce throughout the year. The company began servicing early morning flights from KLM, Air France, and LOT at Terminals 1 and 2, with plans to further extend its services in the coming months. Frankfurt Airport is poised to become Swissport’s largest site in Germany and one of its most vital operations in Europe.
“We’re excited to bring our world-class airport ground handling services to Frankfurt, a major global gateway for international airlines,” said Warwick Brady, President & CEO of Swissport International. “Our ability to start operations successfully reflects our commitment to safety, reliability, and high standards, values that have earned us the trust of both German authorities and our airline partners. Despite facing challenges from one of the competitors before our launch, we are here to stay and are eager to contribute to the ongoing success of Frankfurt Airport.”
Swissport has kicked off its operations in Frankfurt with a team of over 350 ground service professionals. As the year progresses, the company will continue to hire new staff each month to support a growing customer base, accommodate peak travel periods such as Easter and the summer holidays, and prepare for the transition of wide-body aircraft flights from a third-party provider, which will continue until October 2025.
Swissport was awarded the ground handling license for Frankfurt Airport in August 2024 by the Ministry of Transportation of the State of Hesse, following a competitive tender process. The license, which lasts for seven years, grants Swissport the ability to provide ground services to all carriers operating at the airport. Swissport’s services at Frankfurt include passenger handling, baggage services, aircraft pushback, and cargo loading and unloading.
Swissport has been active at Frankfurt since 1995 through its air cargo operations, with the company opening a new, state-of-the-art air cargo warehouse in November 2020, including a specialized pharma center at Cargo City South. Additionally, its subsidiaries N*ICE and AFS have been providing de-icing and fueling services at the airport for decades.
