St. John’s International Airport Returns to Regular Operations

ST. JOHN’S, NL, 2012-08-14 — /travelprnews.com/ — At 4:20 p.m. today, an Ilyushin 76 arriving from Prestwick, Scotland overran the Airport’s primary runway (Runway 11/29). St. John’s International Airport Authority activated its emergency plan and its well-trained and highly skilled emergency response team responded to the incident along with St. John’s Regional Fire Department, Eastern Health, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. The aircraft was carrying nine (9) crew members and none require medical attention.

As of 5:15 p.m., the Airport’s secondary runway (Runway 16) is open for regular operations. Runway 11/29 and Runway 02/20 will remain closed until approximately 9:00 p.m. tomorrow as St. John’s International Airport Authority assesses any damage to its infrastructure as a result of today’s incident.

Updates will be provided as information becomes available. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines on the status of their flight prior to coming to the airport.
