(NEWS) MALE’, Maldives, 2026-Mar-4 — /Travel PR News/ — Visit Maldives Corporation has opened registrations for the Burunu Boma Global Sport Fishing Tournament, positioning the Maldives once again as a hub for international sport fishing and ocean-based adventure tourism. Scheduled to take place from June 13 to 15, 2026, the competition is expected to attract anglers from around the world to the country’s Indian Ocean waters for three days of high-level fishing and marine-focused competition.
The tournament follows the successful debut of the event in 2025, which brought together competitive teams from multiple countries and featured closely contested daily leaderboards. According to information shared by organisers, the upcoming edition is expected to expand significantly, with participation anticipated to more than double as the event gains recognition on the global sport fishing calendar.
Participants will compete across full-day fishing sessions running from early morning until evening, testing both skill and endurance in pursuit of top honours. The competition offers a grand prize of USD 25,000 along with additional awards for Champion Team, Best Captain and Best Angler. Organisers note that successful teams in the inaugural event combined strategic planning with local expertise, including an understanding of seasonal fish migration patterns in the Indian Ocean.
Beyond the competitive element, the event highlights the Maldives’ long-standing fishing traditions and its growing focus on sustainable marine tourism. The tournament follows International Game Fish Association guidelines and emphasises catch-and-release practices aimed at protecting marine ecosystems while maintaining the excitement of competitive sport fishing.
Registration is open through the tournament’s official website, with the main application period running until April 30, 2026 and a late registration window available until May 31. The event will conclude with a cultural celebration on June 16, where winners will be announced alongside traditional Maldivian performances marking the close of the competition.
By combining sport fishing with cultural experiences and environmental responsibility, the Burunu Boma tournament continues to reinforce the Maldives’ reputation as a destination where adventure tourism and ocean conservation intersect.
The tournament builds on momentum generated by earlier editions organised through the Visit Maldives Club, an industry initiative created by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation to bring together tourism stakeholders through collaborative events. The Burunu Boma tournament was officially launched in December 2024 and staged its first competition in 2025, attracting anglers from both the Maldives and abroad to compete in the archipelago’s rich fishing waters. The event was designed not only to highlight the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class sport fishing destination but also to encourage sustainable practices such as catch-and-release fishing while strengthening connections between the global angling community and the country’s tourism sector.
