SFO welcomes oneworld® Alliance announcement to purchase 350 million gallons of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)

Announcement includes usage by Alaska, American Airlines, British Airways

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 2021-Dec-03 — /Travel PR News/ — The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) applauded the announcement by the oneworld® Alliance of 14 airlines to purchase more than 350 million gallons of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from renewable fuels company Aemetis for operations at SFO.

Once finalized, the agreements will cover the delivery of sustainable aviation fuel over a seven-year term beginning in 2024. oneworld members, including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas and Qatar Airways, will look to utilize the sustainable aviation fuel for their operations at SFO, with the potential for additional oneworld members to participate in the coming months.

“We applaud this bold commitment to the environment from the oneworld members at SFO,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “As an industry leader in the advancement of sustainable aviation fuel, we know that decarbonizing air transportation requires full engagement from our airline partners, and we are proud that this latest announcement firmly establishes SFO as the center of this revolution.”

In September 2018, SFO signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a group of eight airlines and fuel producers to work cooperatively on expanding the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels at SFO. The agreement was the first of its kind to include fuel suppliers, airlines, and airport agencies in a collaborative effort to accelerate the global transition to sustainable fuels. In October 2021, SFO announced it had joined dozens of aviation companies around the world in a commitment to phase out fossil jet fuel by 2050.

In November 2021, SFO received an award from Airports Going Green® (AGG), the aviation industry’s leading forum on sustainability, for its efforts to introduce and advance the use of sustainable aviation fuel.
