New Wizz Air MRO Facility Opens at Romaero Băneasa to Support 43-Aircraft Romanian Fleet
(IN SHORT) Wizz Air and Romaero have opened Romania’s first aircraft maintenance center at Romaero’s Băneasa facility near Bucharest Băneasa International Airport. Starting in October, the center will perform heavy and light maintenance on Wizz Air’s Romanian-based fleet of 43 aircraft, as well as visiting planes from nearby countries. A three-year contract with a certified MRO provider and Romaero’s skilled team will secure essential maintenance slots, reduce downtime during peak travel seasons, and support operational reliability. Since 2006, Wizz Air has grown to 204 routes from 13 Romanian airports and employs over 1,600 staff. Romaero, established in 1920, contributes its century-long aerospace expertise to this strategic partnership, which also drives local job creation.
(PRESS RELEASE) BUCHAREST, Romania, 2025-Jul-14 — /Travel PR News/ — Wizz Air, Romania’s leading low-cost carrier, and Romaero, the country’s premier aerospace and defense specialist, today inaugurated Romania’s first aircraft maintenance center dedicated exclusively to Wizz Air. Located at Romaero’s Băneasa facility adjacent to Bucharest Băneasa International Airport, this new hub will bolster the airline’s servicing capacity locally and across the region, while generating skilled jobs in the Romanian aviation sector.
With an expanded fleet soon to include new aircraft at Bucharest Băneasa, Sibiu, Suceava, and Timișoara bases—bringing the total local roster to 43 jets for the upcoming winter season—Romania will remain home to Wizz Air’s largest national fleet. Beginning in October, the Băneasa Maintenance Center will perform both heavy maintenance (including engine swaps) and routine light checks and annual inspections for Romanian-based aircraft as well as visiting planes from neighboring countries.
To staff the facility, Wizz Air has signed a three-year agreement with a certified maintenance organization that already supports its operations in Italy and Albania. Combined with Romaero’s specialized workforce, this partnership will secure crucial maintenance slots, reduce aircraft downtime during Europe’s peak travel months, and ensure priority service for the carrier’s Romanian and wider European operations.
Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, commented at today’s press event: “Opening our first dedicated Romanian MRO center represents a strategic milestone. Since launching at Băneasa Airport in April and adding a second aircraft last week, we have demonstrated our long-term commitment to Romania. This investment enhances our operational resilience and underpins our €14 billion ‘Customer First Compass’ transformation plan, while supporting local job creation in critical aviation roles.”
Wizz Air has operated in Romania since 2006, growing to 204 routes from 13 airports and employing over 1,600 people. The airline offers connections to 75 destinations in 25 countries and maintains eight Romanian bases, including Bucharest-Băneasa, Bucharest-Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iași, Sibiu, Suceava, and Timișoara. Known for its young, fuel-efficient fleet and fully digital service model, Wizz Air continues to invest in new aircraft and cabin enhancements.
Founded in 1920, ROMAERO brings more than a century of expertise in civil and military aircraft manufacturing and MRO services. As a Tier 1 supplier to major OEMs, Romaero provides global support and now strengthens its European footprint through this new collaboration.
Bogdan Costaş, Managing Director of ROMAERO, added: “This collaboration with Wizz Air aligns perfectly with Romaero’s recovery and growth strategy in the civil MRO market. We are confident that our combined strengths will deliver timely, high-quality maintenance services for Wizz Air and bolster our presence across Europe.”
