
Lufthansa City Airlines Takes Delivery of Its First Brand-New Airbus A320neo “Ingelheim am Rhein” to Boost Short-Haul Competitiveness and Expand European Routes
(IN SHORT) Lufthansa City Airlines has received its first brand-new Airbus A320neo, registered as D-AIJP and named “Ingelheim am Rhein,” at Hamburg-Finkenwerder. This delivery marks a significant milestone in the airline’s strategy to revamp continental traffic within the Lufthansa Group, linking its current hub in Munich with the upcoming Frankfurt hub from 2026. The new aircraft, capable of seating 180 passengers, features the latest Airspace cabin with larger overhead bins, modern lighting, and enhanced seating comfort, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to quality service. Currently, the fleet consists of eight aircraft, with plans to expand to 15 new Airbus A320neos by the end of 2025 and to add 40 Airbus A220-300s beginning in late 2026. In alignment with this fleet expansion, the airline is also broadening its European network by launching seven new routes for the summer 2025 schedule, increasing its total destinations to 17. The aircraft, bearing registration D-AIJP and christened “Ingelheim am Rhein,” symbolizes a new era for the airline as it redefines continental traffic between the Lufthansa Group’s major hubs, Munich and, starting in 2026, Frankfurt. This modern addition to the fleet underscores the airline’s role in boosting the competitiveness of Lufthansa’s short-haul network while supporting growth on long-haul routes.

The addition of this aircraft brings the current fleet to eight, comprising four Airbus A319s and four Airbus A320neos. Looking ahead, Lufthansa City Airlines plans to accelerate fleet expansion throughout 2025 by incorporating five more brand-new Airbus A320neos and an additional two Airbus A320neos, aiming to reach a total of 15 aircraft by year-end. Further, from the end of 2026, the airline anticipates receiving the first of 40 Airbus A220-300s on order.
In tandem with fleet growth, the carrier is expanding its route network across Europe. For the summer flight schedule of 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines is adding seven new destinations: Barcelona, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Düsseldorf, Rome, Edinburgh, Seville, and Bordeaux. With these new routes, the airline’s network will now encompass 17 destinations, all available for booking directly via www.lufthansa.com.
