(PRESS RELEASE) London, UK, 2024-Mar-8 — /Travel PR News/ — When it comes to holiday companions, new research from London Luton Airport (LLA) shows mums are the real MVP (Most Valued Passenger) as nearly a third (30%) of travellers would be willing to ditch their friends in favour of a getaway with their mum instead.

Although LLA’s research shows that over a fifth (22%) admit they don’t spend enough quality time with their mum, it seems new travel trends might spark a change, with seven in 10 (69%) saying they’d like a one-to-one holiday with their mum in an effort to spend more quality time together (71%), create lasting memories (59%) and show appreciation for everything she’s done (48%).

What’s more, 71% think holidaying with their mum would ensure planned quality time together, while 48% would like to make mum-ventures a new tradition. In addition, two-thirds (66%) of respondents cite time spent with their Mum during family holidays as some of their most memorable childhood moments.

With over 135,000 passengers expected to travel through London Luton Airport over Mother’s Day weekend, the simple and friendly airport is offering a limited number of complimentary lounge access and fast track security passes – for those jetting away with their mums to help make Mother’s Day extra special this year.

The value of creating deeper maternal relationships is set to rise, as almost two-fifths (38%) want to make more effort with their Mum, from showing gratitude for her support (52%) to trying to call her more often (25%). In fact, six in ten (61%) would go on a holiday with their mum to help strengthen their bond, while 43% would use the opportunity to reignite their relationship.

In the poll of 2,000 people, over half (57%) of respondents wish they could surprise their mum with a getaway this Mothering Sunday, while nearly one in five (19%) claim to put more effort into celebrating the occasion over other moments such as Christmas, birthdays, or anniversaries.

Clare Armstrong, Head of Guest Experience at London Luton Airport says, “It’s heartwarming to see that over half (55%) of holidaymakers want to go on adventures with their Mum, whether it’s a getaway abroad or a cherished moment closer to home.

“We’re thrilled to offer travellers flying with their mums this weekend some exclusive extras to get their trip off to the best possible start, including fast-track security and complimentary passes to the recently opened No1 Lounge in the LLA terminal, as part of our commitment to providing a simple and friendly passenger experience.”

When it comes to mum-ventures, two-thirds (66%) of adults crave the excitement of city breaks, the relaxation of a beach getaway (59%) and the indulgence of a luxury vacation (50%).

About London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport (LLA) is one of the UK’s busiest airports, carrying over 16.2 million passengers in 2023.

The airport is operated by a consortium, of which the majority shareholder is AENA, the world’s largest airport operator, and InfraBridge, a leading infrastructure investment manager. Airlines include easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, FlyOne, Sun Express and El Al.

The Luton Airport Express is a new dedicated train service that allows passengers to travel from central London to the LLA terminal in around 30 minutes. The Luton Airport Express runs from St Pancras International to Luton Airport Parkway station and connects seamlessly with the DART, an electrically powered people mover that connects to the airport terminal in less than four minutes.

In 2023, LLA was named the UK’s best airport by readers of the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller magazine.

Last year, LLA also became only the third major UK airport to achieve Level 4 of the globally recognised Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme, demonstrating that it is ‘transforming its operations to achieve carbon reductions in line with global climate goals’. With a maximum score of 100 and a five-star rating, LLA has been ranked as a sector leader for two consecutive years in the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) benchmark of sustainability governance management and performance of major infrastructure assets worldwide.
