(PRESS RELEASE) Tokyo, Japan, 2024-Aug-2 — /Travel PR News/ — Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) and ENEOS Corporation have signed an agreement for the sale and purchase of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), marking a significant step toward the early implementation of SAF in Japan. ENEOS, a leading Japanese energy company, will be the first to import SAF and supply it to JAL, which has been actively procuring SAF both domestically and internationally.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set a goal to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions from international flights by 2050, with a target to reduce emissions by 15% compared to 2019 levels starting in 2024. To meet these ambitious targets, the promotion of domestically produced SAF is essential. Through this agreement, JAL and ENEOS aim to establish a domestic SAF supply chain, which is crucial for accelerating the decarbonization of the aviation industry.
JAL is committed to updating its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft and increasing its use of SAF. The airline aims to replace 1% of its total fuel consumption with SAF by FY2025 and 10% by FY2030. Additionally, JAL’s “Corporate SAF Program” certifies the environmental benefits of CO2 reductions to corporate customers using JAL flights in Japan, promoting the recognition of SAF’s environmental value.
ENEOS is focused on achieving a stable energy supply and contributing to a carbon-neutral society, as outlined in its Long-Term Vision. The company is developing an integrated SAF system, covering raw materials procurement, in-house manufacturing, and sales.
Moving forward, JAL and ENEOS will continue to collaborate on promoting the widespread use of SAF in Japan, supporting the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
