HKIA’s “Renewable Diesel Pilot Project” receives the Gold Award in the “Over 38 million passengers per annum” category at ACI’s Green Airports Recognition 2025.
The “Renewable Diesel Pilot Project” made HKIA the first airport in Asia to utilize renewable diesel in its ground services equipment. This initiative, launched by Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) in collaboration with Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (HACTL) and Shell Hong Kong Limited, uses hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a type of renewable diesel fully compatible with diesel engines used in various airport equipment, including baggage tractors, airfield sweepers, rubber removal vehicles, and mobile generators. Renewable diesel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 87% compared to conventional petroleum diesel.
Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK, commented, “We are deeply honored to receive these prestigious awards. These achievements reflect the dedicated efforts of our staff, who ensure that HKIA continues to provide world-class service and maintain its status as a leading global aviation hub. Our focus on sustainability, combined with our exceptional service standards and extensive network connectivity, strengthens our position as an international gateway while fulfilling our commitment to environmental stewardship.
