Halifax Stanfield Debuts Fifth CT-Equipped Security Lane and Phases Out YHZ Express for Faster Screening

(IN SHORT) Halifax Stanfield International Airport has opened a new fifth security lane featuring CATSA’s CT X-ray technology, allowing passengers to keep liquids, gels, and electronics in their bags while passing through screening. This upgrade—part of a phased plan—boosts efficiency and will lead to the discontinuation of the YHZ Express reservation-only service after June 30, 2025. HIAA’s Dean Bouchard and CATSA’s Neil Parry highlighted the collaboration’s benefits for security and passenger flow. The airport also shared top travel tips, including standby lot parking, Air Canada’s Digital ID, packing guidelines, pre-planning parking, early arrival recommendations, and the use of mobile customs apps for smoother international travel.

(PRESS RELEASE) NOVA SCOTIA, Canada, 2025-Jun-24 — /Travel PR News/ — Halifax Stanfield International Airport is gearing up for a busy summer travel season by rolling out enhancements to streamline security screening and improve overall passenger convenience. In partnership with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), the airport has completed an expansion of its Domestic/International security checkpoint, adding a fifth screening lane equipped with CATSA’s latest CT X-ray technology.

“As we head into our peak travel months, we’re delighted to collaborate with CATSA on this upgraded facility,” said Dean Bouchard, Vice President of Airport Planning & Development at the Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA). “Introducing the new CT scanner on an additional line underscores our dedication to innovation and efficiency, ensuring travellers enjoy a smoother, faster experience.”

With the new CT-enabled lane now operational, passengers can leave permitted liquids (up to 100 mL), aerosols, gels, medical devices, and large electronics like laptops inside their carry-ons—significantly speeding up the screening process. This installation marks the first phase of a broader rollout that will bring CT scanners to all five Domestic/International lanes at Halifax Stanfield.

“CATSA is fully prepared to screen millions of passengers this summer,” added Neil Parry, Acting President and CEO of CATSA. “We take pride in our partnership with Halifax Stanfield to introduce CT X-ray across the checkpoint, delivering both robust security and an enhanced passenger journey. We wish everyone safe and stress-free travels.”

Owing to the improved throughput provided by these new scanners, HIAA will discontinue its reservation-based YHZ Express security service as of June 30, 2025.

Top Travel Tips for a Stress-Free Trip

  • Standby Lot Parking: Drivers picking up arriving passengers can wait free of charge in the Standby Lot until baggage is claimed, reducing curbside congestion.
  • Digital ID with Air Canada: Eligible flyers on select Air Canada flights can speed up boarding using facial recognition—details are available on the Air Canada website or app.
  • Smart Packing: Consult CATSA’s guidelines at catsa.gc.ca to pack only permitted items and avoid security delays.
  • Plan Your Parking: Review parking options ahead of time to secure your preferred spot and avoid last-minute stress.
  • Arrive Early: Aim to be at the airport at least two hours before domestic departures and three hours before international flights—leaving time to explore local dining and retail offerings.
  • Use Mobile Customs Tools: International arrivals can submit their declarations via the CBSA ArriveCAN app before landing. U.S.-bound travellers from the preclearance facility can simplify entry by using the U.S. CBP’s Mobile Passport Control app.
