Halifax International Airport Authority’s Enhanced International Connections Facility Accelerates Transfers and Expands Freight Capacity

(IN SHORT) The Halifax International Airport Authority has unveiled its new International Connections Facility, allowing select international-to-domestic transfer passengers to stay within secure zones and skip baggage reclaims, thus accelerating connections and enhancing airport amenities access. The ICF also paves the way for increased belly-cargo capacity, improving freight links between Nova Scotia and overseas markets. Ongoing renovations to the current International Arrivals ground floor, slated for completion in 2025, will refresh the area to support growing passenger volumes and cargo demands. Funded by Transport Canada ($8.3 million) and the Nova Scotia government ($3 million), this project strengthens Halifax Stanfield’s status as Atlantic Canada’s key gateway.

(PRESS RELEASE) NOVA SCOTIA, Canada,, 2025-Jul-3 — /Travel PR News/ — The Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has inaugurated its cutting-edge International Connections Facility (ICF), a significant addition designed to enhance traveler convenience, bolster cargo throughput, and spur economic development across the region. With this new facility, eligible international passengers connecting to domestic flights can remain within the secure zone and bypass baggage re-check, enabling quicker transfers and more time to explore the airport’s offerings.

Beyond passenger flow improvements, the ICF lays the groundwork for expanding belly-hold cargo capacity, streamlining the movement of goods between Nova Scotia and global markets. While these enhancements mark a major milestone, the overhaul of the existing International Arrivals area’s ground floor will continue through 2025, refreshing the space to fully support the anticipated rise in both passenger and freight traffic.

This transformative project was realized through the generous contributions of Transport Canada and the Government of Nova Scotia, which invested $8.3 million and $3 million respectively. By upgrading infrastructure and trade pathways, Halifax Stanfield cements its role as Atlantic Canada’s premier gateway.

“This project represents an important step in developing Halifax Stanfield’s infrastructure to meet growing demands. Opening the ICF enhances how we serve connecting passengers, while laying the groundwork for further improvements coming later this year.”
— Joyce Carter, President & CEO, HIAA
