Edmonton International Airport installs new Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks

Edmonton, AB, 2020-Dec-18 — /Travel PR News/ — Passenger health and safety continues to be the top priority for Edmonton International Airport and new machines being installed are using the power of UV-C light to help reduce COVID-19 risks in travel.
Edmonton International Airport (EIA) has partnered with the Innovative Travel Solutions team from YVR (Vancouver International Airport) to install new Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks inside the US Customs area of the airport. These 12 machines help speed up the process of going through US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) by screening passengers in advance before they see an in-person agent. The machines have been installed in USCBP section of the airport in anticipation of the return of more flights to the United States in 2021 and because the previous machines had reached the end of their life-cycle.
As part of the airport’s response to COVID-19, EIA launched its Ready program, which focuses on health and safety at the airport. A part of the program includes integrating new technology into the airport to complement the enhanced cleaning operations through the terminal. The APC machines installed are an upgrade on the previous versions because of a unique feature – they use concentrated UV-C light, similar to sunlight, to destroy 99.9 per cent of all bacteria on touch surfaces.
The UV cleaning technology bathes everything below the light, which includes the document and fingerprint scanners and main screen, with bacteria-destroying UV light. After a three-minute cleaning cycle, 99.9% of bacteria and viruses on surfaces will be eliminated. The kiosk also includes a built-in motion detector that will shut off the light when users are in close proximity.
EIA’s Technology and Operations teams worked closely with staff from Vancouver International Airport on the installation and setup of the machines. All Canadian airports have been impacted the COVID-19 pandemic and working together to find solutions and implement new technologies makes sense for everyone.
In the future, EIA hopes to further integrate this technology with other self-serve kiosks in the domestic travel areas as they are due for replacement.
