(PRESS RELEASE) Chicago, IL, 2024-Nov-9 — /Travel PR News/ — The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) marked a significant advancement in the modernization of O’Hare International Airport with the opening of a new six-story parking garage at Terminal 5. This milestone, part of Mayor Brandon Johnson‘s vision to upgrade O’Hare, introduces the first dedicated parking facility for Terminal 5, which serves both domestic and international travelers and more than doubles the parking capacity.
“This project is integral to our efforts to provide a world-class experience at every touchpoint,” stated Mayor Johnson.
The $191 million garage includes features such as a real-time parking guidance system, 48 electric vehicle charging stations, and an enclosed pedestrian bridge connecting directly to Terminal 5. It offers short- and long-term parking options and replaces part of the adjacent Lot D surface lot, which will continue to provide 650 parking spaces.
CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee commented, “This new garage highlights our dedication to innovation and sustainability, making arrivals and departures more seamless for travelers.”
Designed by SCB, the garage also adds visual appeal to Terminal 5 with its ornamental metal cladding and gentle curves, creating an architectural feature that enhances the terminal’s appearance.
The construction was managed by a joint venture between AECOM Hunt, Clayco, and BOWA, employing a diverse workforce that includes 47 minority-owned and 39 women-owned firms. The project has already surpassed its diversity goal of 26% minority participation, achieving 34.8% to date.
Currently, the first five levels of the garage are open to the public, with the rooftop, Level 6, set to open later this month. Future plans include additional road adjustments to optimize traffic flow and expanded curbside space.
This new facility is part of O’Hare’s wider “O’Hare 21” initiative, an ambitious transformation designed to reimagine the terminal experience, making it more efficient and comfortable for travelers around the world.
