Zurich Airport Announces Ongoing Construction and Maintenance Works for 2025

While these activities are essential to maintaining the airport’s operations, the company is committed to minimizing any disruption and noise emissions, particularly during nighttime work.
As one of the busiest airports in Europe, Zurich Airport’s runways, taxiways, and apron areas endure significant wear and tear due to constant traffic. To ensure these areas remain in optimal condition, regular repairs and upgrades are necessary. To avoid interfering with daily flight schedules, some of this work will take place at night.
Hotel/India Apron Refurbishment
One of the key projects for 2025 is the refurbishment of the Hotel/India apron. Starting in mid-February, a new main drainage channel will be constructed between runway 16/34 and the apron at dock B. This work will include the installation of sheet piles, which must be done during the night due to their noisy nature. Approximately 15 nights will be dedicated to driving the piles into the ground, and another 15 nights will be allocated for their removal once the channel has been completed. This phase of construction is expected to continue until autumn 2025.
Runway Joint Sealant Repairs
The annual maintenance work for runway 16/34 will focus on the repair and renewal of joint sealants, with approximately 50 kilometers of joints set to be refurbished. This is critical to maintaining the surface’s integrity and preventing water damage. The repairs will take place during the airport’s nightly closure, between March and August, and will be carried out with minimal noise disruptions.
Wastewater Separation Optimization
Starting in June, Zurich Airport will carry out technical adjustments at the Delta pumping station to optimize wastewater separation systems. These works are slated to finish in November and will take place intermittently during the night, with no significant noise expected.
New Radar Installation
Skyguide will be installing a new radar system between Zone West and runway 10/28 to enhance ground movement monitoring. This radar will replace the current system located on the existing tower. The installation will occur between March and September 2025, with work scheduled during specific nighttime hours to ensure minimal impact on airport operations and noise levels.
General Maintenance
In addition to the major projects listed, Zurich Airport will also conduct routine maintenance throughout the year. As always, the airport will prioritize carrying out this work during the nighttime to avoid significant disruptions to flight operations, particularly in sensitive areas of the airport.
