2012-11-20 — /travelprnews.com/ — During the annual Travel Magazine Awards event, which this year took place on Friday 16 November in Antwerp, the “Respect for Nature Award” was given out for the first time. Although in general the Travel Magazine Awards are intended for the travel industry in particular, the case submitted by Brussels Airport was the most convincing in the eyes of the jury.
Contrary to the image aviation generally has in that area, sustainable development is a key priority for most of the larger airports. For many years, Brussels Airport has been carrying out a strict environmental policy that did not pass unnoticed both in our own country and abroad through the implementation of several striking projects in the areas of water, soil, air quality, noise and energy management. Some of the most remarkable projects of the last years include the putting into service of our own water treatment plant for the purification of sanitary and de-icing wastewater, the active participation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme which aims to reduce carbon emissions, the implementation of several ambitious steps in the area of separate waste treatment and the generation of our own energy using solar panels.
The award was accepted by Marleen Vandendriessche, Director Legal & Environmental Affair with The Brussels Airport Company. “It is heart-warming that the travel industry acknowledges and rewards our efforts for the environment”, she reacts. “In running the airport, Brussels Airport does its best to minimise the impact of its activities on the environment. Sustainable development can only be achieved through close cooperation with our partners at the airport; a cooperation we intend to further strengthen in the future.”
