British Airways features comedian Matt Lucas in its new TV advertising campaign

LONDON, UK, 2018-Nov-12 — /Travel PR News/ — Anyone who has flown has been there – the panic when you realise you’ve left your change in your pocket as you step through the metal detector, only to fish madly about trying to get it all out before being sent back to walk through the scanner again.

Comedian Matt Lucas brings this predicament to life brilliantly in British Airways’ new TV advertising campaign, which launches today to thank the airline’s customers for raising a phenomenal £20m in eight years for Flying Start, their charity partnership with Comic Relief, simply through donating loose change and foreign currency on board flights.

The light-hearted advert features Lucas as a haphazard traveller who, as he wrestles with the change in his pocket, is met by a British Airways crew member reminding him he can donate his spare currency to Flying Start. The advert sees Lucas drop change all over the floor while crowds of incredulous travellers look on and finishes with him dropping the contents of his bag over the floor.

Hamish McVey, British Airways’ Head of Marketing, said: “Our customers have really dug deep and donated so generously over the eight years since we launched Flying Start that we wanted to say thank-you in a very public way – and you don’t get much more public than a TV ad.

“In the true spirit of Comic Relief we wanted to land a serious message by making people laugh and we hope we’ve achieved just that.”

The advert follows a similar comedic style to British Airways’ Flying Start safety videos (click here to view the original Director’s cut, and here to view the sequel) featuring actors such as Sir Ian McKellen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rowan Atkinson, Thandie Newton, Joanna Lumley, Naomie Harris and Michael Caine, and launches ahead of the airline celebrating its Centenary next year.
