ANA Holdings Acquires Nippon Cargo Airlines, Becoming Japan’s Top Passenger-Cargo Carrier
(IN SHORT) On August 1, 2025, ANA Holdings acquired all shares of Nippon Cargo Airlines via a simplified share exchange, making the ANA Group Japan’s largest integrated passenger-and-cargo airline and the world’s 14th-largest by cargo tonnage. The deal merges NCA’s fleet—including eight Boeing 747-8Fs—with ANA’s six 767 freighters and two 777 freighters, substantially increasing capacity on routes linking Japan, Asia, Europe and the U.S. CEO Koji Shibata highlighted the synergy between NCA’s cargo expertise and ANA’s global network, promising more competitive services, supply-chain optimisation support, and greater resilience to market volatility. With Narita Airport’s future runway expansion, the Group aims for sustainable growth and to solidify its position as a key player in worldwide logistics. NCA’s results will be consolidated into ANA HD’s financials from Q2 FY2025.
(PRESS RELEASE) TOKYO, Japan, 2025-Aug-5 — /Travel PR News/ — ANA Holdings (ANA HD) has completed its acquisition of Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA) following regulatory approval, finalizing a simplified share exchange with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha on August 1. This transaction elevates the ANA Group to Japan’s largest combined passenger-and-cargo carrier and, by cargo tonnage, the world’s 14th-largest airline group, as per IATA’s 2024 statistics.

By uniting NCA’s expansive freighter operations—eight Boeing 747-8Fs (plus seven 747-400Fs leased to third parties)—with ANA’s own fleet of six Boeing 767Fs and two Boeing 777Fs, the Group will significantly bolster capacity on routes between Japan, Asia, Europe and the U.S. Koji Shibata, ANA HD’s President and CEO, emphasised that merging NCA’s specialized cargo know-how with ANA’s global network will “greatly improve our capability to serve customers’ needs” and deliver enhanced value in freight solutions worldwide.
Leveraging NCA’s expertise in handling specialized commodities and mass freighter shipments alongside ANA’s passenger and cargo network, the combined Group will provide more competitive, high-quality services and support clients in optimising supply chains and seizing new business opportunities. The strengthened cargo division is also expected to enhance ANA’s resilience against market fluctuations, improving overall profitability.

Looking ahead, the opening of additional runways at Narita Airport will further augment departure and arrival capacity, underpinning ANA’s commitment to sustainable growth and its role as a critical logistics infrastructure supporting global commerce and communities. From the second quarter of fiscal 2025, NCA’s financial results will be fully consolidated into ANA HD’s accounts.
